So Google Reader is being discontinued.

You got to be fucking kidding me.

Take Facebook or Twitter or some shit instead. I need my rss feeds.

I'm giving Netvibes a try in the face of this (and the igoogle situation)

Confused at the multitude of articles popping up putting forward the idea that twitter has rendered rss redundant. I really don't understand the logic behind that.

Of course, the real reason (i think) G is getting rid of the reader is that they want to drive traffic back to content-originating websites so they can sell more advertising.

Yeah that sucks, and I access it by having it on my iGoogle homepage, which is also going away in November :(

ironically trending on twitter

how do you even compare clear and organised rss feed with random tweet poop with an occasional interesting link/article/what-have-you?

Я твой слуга, Я твой работник

ahh what the fuck?!

I use it every day; I usually have it open as a pinned tab.

All of them fuckers ditching RSS..because it's simple, easy to implement, reliable..who needs that nowadays! I [like] to #lick @myass

tiny tiny RSS

pro: is a self hosted thing.

contra: is a self hosted thing.

ownCloud

just recently, my hoster introduced that as 1Click-installer thingy. RSS Reader should implemented in the next release. there is an app already available, but feels a bit alpha-ish

rubbish. Igoogle is actually a very useful homepage.

There was a notice on that page for a couple of months saying iGoogle was gonna stop at the end of this year (November maybe ?), but that seems to have vanished now so yeah I don't know if that's going too ?

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I have tried Reeder and Feedly today.

I don't really like Reeder. But Feedly is quite nice, I really like its interface.

I'm not sure how to import my subscriptions permanently though, it only connects/syncs with my my google reader account.

You download a XML file from google called takeout. Then use that, usually labeled subscriptions.xml

Yeah, I've read the article, and I have downloaded the xml file. But I can't really figure out how to import the file into the app.

I thought so, I'm just wondering why they've taken down the notice to say it's going. By removing it it sounds like they changed their minds about closing it (which I'm guessing isn't the case)

Say it for me, maybe you dismissed the message. Which you can do with most google things.

  • 3 months later...

So Feedly seems a perfect replacement for Google Reader, but is there an alternative to iGoogle ? It was nice to have the useful bits of about a half dozen different sites just on the one page

I've been using commafeed as my replacement. it's really similar to google reader, so the transition was pretty painless; I can still use all my keyboard shortcuts. you've got until july 15th to export your google reader data with google takeout if you haven't done so yet.

I'm using Feedly and loving it. The iOS app is great to use and so much better than the mobile version of Reader was.
