the terminator robots look cool and all, and really pissed

but its funny to me, even with it having been in the 80s, that cameron had them with hydraulics

those things are already as dated as the b movie/c movie sci fi robots from the 50s where they are made out of boxes

they will have synthetic muscles

If I built a robot for war it would fly and maneuver really fast and shoot like a motherfucker and be hard to kill and would self destruct if anything went wrong.

But it could also walk on 4 or 6 legs and go into pipes and shit. It might be able to burrow itself in sand.

And lasers, it would fire lasers.

While that photograph looks a bit more recent than 1912, I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

Just saw these (both hexapods were built by the same engineer -- not Pentagon though, dude just really seems to like hexapods):

I really like the second, littler bot... "Outfit a hexapod robot like this with a welder, 3D printing nozzle, router—or all of the above—and send one or more skittering off on programmed or autonomous fabrication and repair missions. Heck, add magnetic feet and these things could work on bridges, skyscraper supports, even space stations."

Both those hexapods are pretty cool. The first is more of a vehicle, while the second is more of a mobile 3D printer.

I don't really have a problem with robots being used for construction and other benign duties, but something designed to kill people like the Predator drones of today is what I find disturbing about the goal of autonomy in robots.

the problem with the first vid (if it's the same one that i watched yesterday with this chap and device) is where he talks about the hexapod being capable of going 10x faster and that he had done this in testing. would have been nice to have seen that

If i could i would go back in time i would fight with the indians...

But seriosuly tho, an uprising against the US goverment is quickly needed before they get

these sons of bitches fully developed. People need to wake up.

http://mashable.com/2013/03/01/bigdog-robot-throws-cinder-blocks/

Robots are everywhere. In our cars, our factories and our homes. They're also running up the sides of steep hills and completely mastering tough terrain. At least that was BigDog's signature move — until now. The Boston Dynamicsrobot finally has an arm and it's using it to toss cinder blocks clear across the room.

Placed where the "dog's" head might normally be, the articulated appendage is being used right now to demonstrate how the robot can use its whole body to throw heavy objects, rather like a champion shot putter might throw a 10-pound ball 75 feet across a field.

BigDog is actually a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) project, and the long-term goal is to create a robot that moves as well as a human or animal across difficult terrain.

About the size of a small mule or very big dog, BigDog weighs 240 pounds and uses a host of servos and sensors to dance its way across the ground at up to 4 miles per hour. It can carry loads of up to 340 pounds and will trundle on for nearly 13 miles before needing to refuel.

With its four animal-like legs, tiny feet and rather large body, it's quite impressive to watch, but BigDog's latest stunt is a combination of stunning and scary.

We'd guess that the autonomous BigDog coming at you might give you a start, but once it starts throwing things, well, then it wins. End of story. If you think we're being Nervous Nellies, listen closely to the video and you'll hear someone yelling a cautionary "throwing!" moments before each BigDog cinder block toss.

What do you think of Big Dog's newest capability and are you ready for autonomous and agile robots among us?

Check out some of our other favorite robots in the slideshow below.

The irony is that I got a mail to sign some petition a while ago.

ICRAC is a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO). We are an international committee of experts in robotics technology, robot ethics, international relations, international security, arms control, international humanitarian law, human rights law, and public campaigns, concerned about the pressing dangers that military robots pose to peace and international security and to civilians in war.

ICRAC members invite you to join us in calling upon the international community to urgently commence discussions about an arms control regime to reduce the threat to humanity posed by these systems.

But, yes, it's a bit silly to aim for a "terminator" story when reality is it takes far less to create deadly machines. The technology to build some flying drone which is able to autonomously pull a trigger is already out there. Just like cars which can park itself.

It's not being developed by the Pentagon (this is DARPA's competition), but this is quite a bit more wild than PETMAN imo.

Is this a mosquito?

No. It's an insect spy drone for urban areas, already in production, funded by the US Government. It can be remotely controlled and is equipped with a camera and a microphone. It can land on you, and it may have the potential to take a DNA sample or leave RFID tracking nanotechnology on your skin. It can fly through an open window, or it can attach to your clothing until you take it in your home.

governments around the world have our best interests in mind. move along, there is nothing to see here

This looks rendered

It is clearly a render/photoshop mockup.

It's the next step in their design evolution. I'd like to see another 2-3 iterations further into development. It is cool how it conquers gaps in the floor though, but in such an inelegant manner.

check out the slomo recap of this

uses all 4 legs to create the strength and momentum required to throw the concrete block

what i dont understand is why hasn't some hollywood filmmaker made a dystopian realistic robot wars type thing, like put predator drones and big dogs all over your fucking movie.

I think we need laws against developing robotic armies in the same way that we shouldn't be making tons of nukes. Probably need them sooner than later.

There will be new love from the ashes of us.
