yes but a lot of these guys (not zizek per se) are just chiming in on topics they aren't experts in and people are listening to them purely because they're scientists or trusted public intellectuals, which kind of defeats the purpose. it's like saying "this dude is smart, hand it off to him". not saying this is across the board or even really applicable to this topic, as zizek is a pretty established philosophical force, but just responding to eugene's statement.

i do agree though, stimulation where there wasn't any is better than nothing. if it leads people to pursue actual study, great.

The "public intellectual" business is very despicable. Not the writing for broad audiences business, but the business of "being a public intellectual".

Socrate's role can't be compared to Zizek, or Neil degrasse tyson, I hope you're joking

It's a horrible, black day when people compare Zizek to socrates

im not being mean here, honest.

can you explain to me in a rather clear statement, what exactly is your deal is with this thread? im not the biggest fan of zizek in philosophical terms, but the guy is entertaining,, and like many have said around here, as long as he gets people thinking about marxism, cultural shifts, or fuck even HEGEL HIMSELF in any fashion is a leg up from where we were before it. But despite my disagreements with him, im not going to disparage him merely for being a public figure.

Could you, for us layman idiots, please explain succinctly why Zizek is not worth our time, and perhaps suggest one or two individuals who might be better worth it?

You have more or less pinpointed my problem here, I think these topics are not worth devoting time to, as so I avoid them (although I haven't always avoided them, I wasted a lot of time on them in High School, which I profoundly regret. I didn't even pick up any chicks as a result because I was too anti-social). So I would say that by thinking about these things, we are a leg down from where we were before. (My complaint is not against Zizek specifically, as I have not read his works, taking care to steer clear of the postmodernism, gender studies, cultural studies/etc. section of bookstores).

Why do I think these industries are a waste of time? Because no one can tell me what they're good for with a straight face. If I ask "Has human knowledge been advanced at all by Zizek (substitute Critical Theory, deconstructionism, Materialist Psychology, and on and on)", I get answers like "OMG, is that guy for real? Is that a serious question?". Those are just ingrained reflexes designed to cow detractors of the entire industry, which remains utterly isolated from the real areas of progress, such as systems biology, quantum theory, cryptocurrency, ....

What do we owe to Zizek? What do we owe to Hegel? What do we owe to Deleuze and Guattari? If you try to answer these, please don't say something like "Dude, everybody knows this, stop asking silly questions" and just try to succinctly tell me what advances they made.

"Analytic philosophy", which, while being slightly more meritorious, has also been taken over by charlatans so is not much better. For example, John Searle and David Chalmers have confused and deluded millions, and recovery is slow. At least with these guys it's easy to see that what they're saying is bullshit, whereas with the Deleuzes and Baudrillards, it's impossible to see what they're even saying to begin with.

Off the top of my head, I strongly recommending reading both of David Deutsch's books.

my (incredibly idiotic) opinion of philosophy was that it was the joy of trying to answer, unanswerable useless questions.

for shits and giggles, basically.

I appreciate Slavoj Zizek because he highlights some really important questions and admits that there are still no practical alternatives to capitalism.. It's fun to see how his overclocked brain manifests its randomness as external ticks and overly-repeated gestures.. if he tried TM, his brain would implode I guess..

I's love to play Go with him. But I'm a bit afraid he'd mess up the board with one of those mannerisms.

www.petergaber.com is where I keep my paintings. I used to have a kinky tumblr, but it exploded.
