A: he's cutting the wrong bit of rope - doesn't seem like the piece he is cutting is going to make much of a difference to anything...surely he should be cutting in front of the post.

B: he appears to be pointing at the sky with his index finger, rather than making an insulting gesture towards the police (as i believe the commonly held view to be).

so i think the guy with the machete is actually a police mole, helping them to cross and pointing at the sky to indicate they should call in some kind of air support.

if he cut that part of the rope, there would be nothing holding the post and the bridge would collapse.

The post isn't just sittin on top of the ground. I imagine it is deeply rooted, 3 maybe even 4 or 5 feet deep.
