On The Beach (1959)

The book was a lot more grim to me and this is an oddly pleasant film to watch despite the plot, which is essentially the last living humans in Australia waiting for fallout from the North to creep in and kill them off.

1:07:00 - 1:38:40 involves a submarine scouting mission from Australia being sent to investigate a signal coming from a vacant San Francisco, seems an appropriate backdrop to a portion of the soundtrack:

because TH starts with an old VHS-sounding logo music intro, it's hard to not think of the whole UK thing with video nasties, so stuff on the DPP banned list might work. i'd say 'cannibal holocaust', some of the gory fulci stuff, and some giallo films like mrs wardh (trailer is NSFW)
