yeah j/k. i think DACs sound mostly the same nowadays, these things are everywhere and well understood.

the job of a DAC is to be accurate, not to do some mystical magic turbo boost to a signal.

but when you google for "akai mpc dac sound", you get message board threads full of proper opinionated bullshit which completely defies common sense...

there's probably something in the mpc software which fattens the sound or something.

(disclaimer: never touched an mpc myself)

I think what it really is is that the MPCs by default put subtle compression on everything at the output stage. You can switch it off, but most heephoop producers never really make it that deep lol.

The magic bad DAC machine you are describing is called a bit crusher hahaha.

yeah i have jj os 3. its pretty sweet.

the grid editing is so cool and smooth. Love the adsr you get for each sound however they are hardly envelopes. you can get a bit of movement but not enough to use it as a proper synth.

Would recommend it however ive heard they have taken away some of the small features in the previous OS

Hey guys. Just came by to say that I'm grabbing A/D's MPC4K at the end of the month. I've been obsessed with MPCs for years, so I'm very excited to finally own one (especially one as powerful as the 4K)!

When I'm done working on my current record I'm going to transition away from DAWs, and the MPC will undoubtedly play a massive role in that move. I'm planning to record everything--or most everything--onto the MPC, then send all the individual outs to my Tascam 388, then mix down back to the MPC, then dump that mixdown to my computer via USB.

And for some stuff I'll use the MPC to play samples and sequence my 3 synths and SP-303, and record everything to the 388 (whereupon I'll once again dub down to the MPC). I'm very excited to have a nice hardware setup and a reel-to-reel. A few years ago that was just a pipe dream.

Anyway, thanks y'all for shedding all the great MPC-related thoughts.

Cheers

Damn dude! I didn't know your plans were so detailed. I'm glad it's going to a loving home

I lied. My real plans are to use it as a toilet.

Craigslist. Not much of an interesting story, I'm afraid.

Finding one of those is pretty cool, usually I just see R2Rs or old mixers, and more often than not they "need work".

Yeah man I would recommend not having stuff like the 388 sent through the post because some of the parts are super fragile. Every story I've ever read about someone getting a 388 through the post, at the very least the fuses broke and the user had to go through an annoying diagnostic sorta mode where they are looking for the problem for 2 months. That's what happened to me, too. I think the VU meter lights died in the post as well, which is annoying because you literally have to pull all of the guts out of the thing to access them. Horrible design.

But it really is a beautiful piece of gear. I grew up using cassette 4-tracks, so for someone like me the 388 is the holy grail.

  • 2 weeks later...

can you record a synth note on an mpc and transpose it across the pads and play that way?

can people explain how they are using their mpcs in this thread?

like are you chopping up old records, doing the hip hop thing or or you just using it as a master midi sequencer? etc

i'm a noob but very interested. i like the idea of hardware only

It's been a while since I've used one, but all of the above. You can sequence live, but there's also a grid editor on the 4k, as well as the event editor.

The 4k has the same sampling engine as the Akai Z4/8 dedicated samplers and it isn't stripped down. It's a fully functional sampler with just about every feature to ever grace hardware samplers. The older mpc's sampling engines are pretty bare in comparison to their dedicated samplers that came out around the same time, but not the 4k. You can do a lot of synth like work to samples in the box. There are tons of effects as well.
