Help Ban Horrifying Animal Abuse Videos in the Philippines

Hi guys. I don't usually posts petitions and the like but I find this absolutely disgusting and felt I had to speak out.

PETA Asia (helped by PETA affiliates around the world) has been working hard to shut down the production of cruel "crush" videos, disturbing films in which young girls in "sexy" outfits are videotaped tormenting, abusing, and killing animals—slowly and painfully.

As much as I have a very much live and let live attitude about most things. This clearly doesn't apply to that rule.

ive seen those videos before they're absolutely fucked. compeltely unwatchable.

I know you mean well MadamChaos but echoing what's been said earlier, PETA is extremist and misguided and relentlessly stubborn.

I think this is legitimate petition of course, since it's pushing for legislation and legal action, but at the expense of sounding cynical these 'crush videos' are not new and sadly will occur again. It's essentially an illegal and underground activity to begin with. The best we can do is prosecute those who make them. My qualm with PETA is they aren't very pragmatic: they always tie back their causes to their promotion of veganism and support for the ALF (that's not as bad actually, I remember how much their misleading and trollish "eductional material" for children pisses me off more.)

Groups like the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF - the "Panda" logo one) and World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) are far successful and more focused activist groups. While I'm not opposing this petition or similar specific causes PETA has involved itself it, I would strongly recommend donating to them in the longrun over PETA.

i saw a video when i was driving across America in the 90's. It was on the hotel cable tv. It was about 15 minutes long and it followed this Chinese man in a chinese market slowly killing a cat. He took it out of a cage and just went from one torturous thing to the next. I remember he dunked the cat in boil water to remove its fur. It was still alive after the dunking. It was like a food market so i guess it was for a practical reason and not soley to torture. The Asian countries are really fucked up in this area. Couldnt eat chinese food for a year

i think showing this stuff is actually effective in shaking people up and pushing them towards vegetarianism/veganism, comparing cute little kittens to other animals like cows and chickens etc. so i really don't mind such militant and provocative tactics when they are focused on such a clear-cut issue.

I actually find completely unbelievable this kind of videos. Like, come on, are those girls like crazy or wtf? I've seen some of those videos and it simply amaze me, I can't understand why the fuck they would do that... Those girls could be doing porn and shit, but why this?

no, but i do honestly dislike myself for not being one. it'll happen sooner or later.

I feel the same way, but I also know I'll probably never have the willpower to give up meat (nor the drive to compose nutritionally-balanced veggie meals). Although living in China is another good incentive, everything meat-ish is tainted...

As a vegan, I'll say I'm not at all a fan of PETA. While there's a baby in there somewhere, there's just so much bathwater. And what is worse is that in many minds PETA has come to represent vegetarian/vegan values and animal rights, which are then sullied by proxy.

Fuck PETA.

Now, normally I bite my tongue in threads such as this since my perspective can quite easily come off as harsh and self-righteous, but regarding animal snuff videos I will simply say that if you think there is a difference between these snuff videos and the way your meat comes about then you are either misinformed, deluded, or you live on a farm (or some variant of this third option).

Given that these snuff videos are literally just a slight twist on what happens to billions of animals yearly, I don't find this even remotely noteworthy as far as animal rights are concerned***. Culturally, psychologically, and legally it is certainly interesting.

I hate to sound like the pretentious prick that says "I am not Trayvon Martin" but there it is. Animal snuff videos are drops in a vast ocean of ugliness and as such are not noteworthy. Taking this particular issue to heart is silly: it's like only caring about rape victims who were assaulted on Tuesdays.

Anyway, this concludes my yearly rant on animal rights.

***To me the interesting discussion is about how one enacts one's values or morals. For instance, stuff like the Animal Liberation Front really hit on the moral dilemma of animal rights: If you truly believe that animals deserve the rights and dignities afforded humans then the logical, moral thing to do is break into labs and liberate as many animals as possible, laws be damned. And of course this runs contrary to the sort of Paul McCartney strain of animal rights activism, where you fund just causes and try to raise awareness and stuff like that and then just kinda hope people come around, which Animal Liberation Front would probably liken to trying to raise awareness about [American] slavery and just hope that the slave-owners come around.
