awepittance
i was down with that graphic until I had to have a hearty lol out of the PETA is associated with the ELF and animal liberation front '2 ORGANIZATIONS THE US GOVERNMENT DEEMS DOMESTIC TERRORISTS' wow what a bunch of fucking bullshit. So because John Ashcroft, a man who lost to a dead man in a governor race said it, it's now a valid argument? *barfs* I have problems with PETA sometimes, but this graphic just shot its self in the foot with the stupidest statement I've seen all dayAnybody who uses the idea that 'eco-terrorism' is a serious threat, loses all credibility out of the gates. I don't care how long we've been indoctrinated to think that the ELF is as scary as a suicide bomber, but to me its no smarter than something Sarah Palin would say with a straight face. LimpyLoo
Just to reiterate: it really irks me that this in particular bothers people. For instance, stuff like the Animal Liberation Front really hit on the moral dilemma of animal rights: If you truly believe that animals deserve the rights and dignities afforded humans then the logical, moral thing to do is break into labs and liberate as many animals as possible, laws be damned. And of course this runs contrary to the sort of Paul McCartney strain of animal rights activism, where you fund just causes and try to raise awareness and stuff like that and then just kinda hope people come around, which Animal Liberation Front would probably liken to trying to raise awareness about [American] slavery and just hope that the slave-owners come around. What to do, what to do... Sounds to me, one should take the political route, instead of the activists route. The same route that brought us the international human rights law, for example. It's quite telling that when you google international human rights you get top hits from wiki pages describing official laws and organisations, and the page from the un. Googling international animal rights however gives a different picture. Some conference and gatherings, a list of animal rights groups and a defunct organisation. Hardly anything outside of the activists realm, as far as I can tell. I've got nothing against activists, but as long as there is no real (international) political will, there won't be real sustainable solutions, I believe. goDel
I think he's raised some valid points. No need to "come on" him when you disagree, i guess. Even if this argument has been made before. I'd imagine there wouldn't be any difference from the animals point of view. Take any other non-animal point of view, and the story would indeed be quite different. For instance, the legal point of view. If there would be such a thing as international animal rights, distinctions like these would make perfect sense ( even though they wouldn't really matter from the animals point of view). I think we've argued about this before. The only difference I see is the reason for the suffering--the intentions of the people causing the suffering--which is academic in my view. If animal rights is the actual concern here--and not just aesthetic repulsion--then in what universe would it matter why an animal was tortured? Either they deserve rights or they don't. I would even go so far as to say that slaughterhouse treatment is magnitudes worse [caution: NSFW, animal cruelty] and that crush videos pale in contrast to the point that they are a nearly negligable issue in the grand scheme of animal rights. I mean, we're talking hundreds (thousands, maybe) versus tens of billions, most of whom have suffered much worse than any crush video. Of course, if there is a fault in my premises or my logic then please let me know, but from where I'm sitting this is how things look. Guest A/D
I think what you're saying is quite consistent, Limpy. My only justification is that I think of being alive as a violent act. On a cellular level we are waging war daily. Nature is a battle for food, often ending in death. We just happen to have become disgustingly efficient at it. I know my body thrives on eating other animals. I think it's a natural thing on an individual level, even when on an institutional level it's horrifying. So, yes. Completely agree that animal rights are inconsistent. Maybe people feel as though animals killed for food, no matter how gruesomely, are serving an understandable purpose; whereas they recoil at a sexual motive. I for one feel an obligation to hunt for my food someday. I know in my heart I would appreciate meat as a gift from an animal if I was the one killing and preparing it for food. My guilt from eating meat always stems from consuming it as a meaningless byproduct (fast food nuggets) or in absurd quantities (i.e. many American diets). I've felt a lot better in the last few years by going days eating only vegetarian meals. I'm also someone who has an affinity for animals in general and that makes me feel a lot more obligated to appreciate livestock and meat as many people have to in other parts of the world.
