TBF I don't think listening to odd tracks works on any album by The Field....

sure it does. do you think everyone got in the field by listening to full albums?

preview track doesn't do much for me. sure it could work in the context of the album but we'll see

I actually like the Field in smaller doses, a 2-3 tracks at a time tops.

Yeah...new method, same results.

agreed. not a bad thing but I was expecting sonething different. solid album though.

Very pleased after ~5 listens. Anyway, what's wrong with your new stuff sounding like your old stuff, when all the old stuff is ace?

I haven't heard the new album yet. But I don't think you can keep producing the same music over and over again without either losing fans/sales or boring yourself.

But we know he likes repetition so maybe he'll be repeating himself forever.

As I say haven't heard yet. probably isn't that similar but obviously the field is the field

I don't disagree about diminishing returns eventually, I just don't think he's there yet.

after 1st listen...pretty underwelming. where are the melodies? the tracks...don't seem to go anywhere? no build ups and the loops aren't nearly as catchy as on the other albums.

however, seems like could be a great album to put on when trying to fall asleep

So I'm listening to the full stream now and I'm not sure how you can say this isn't different. Yes, it is unmistakably The Field, but it's different sounding to the others (so far at least).

Each of his albums has shown a subtle change from one to the next and I'm happy with that. I'm not aware of anyone else that really makes music like this, so why wish for him to change what he's doing?

Yeah, I think he's very gradually evolved his style over time. But in context that makes sense - Kompakt is not exactly a progressive label, they always ebb and flow and all but in terms of basic aesthetic all of their artists are quite formulaic. (I hate to say this a German thing, but the standards in style and methods that label commits to are seemingly arbitrary and specific)

reminds me of the Voigt interview with RBMA:

  Quote

Participant: I'm not either a fan of techno music. Actually, like this last week, I've been listening to more techno and house than in my whole life. Since you talked about Kraftwerk many times, and I'm a big fan of Kraftwerk, I'd like to know why this drum pattern in the electronic music like dance music has never changed? Kraftwerk had many different patterns, like that influenced Miami bass, and all that funky stuff.

Wolfgang Voigt: You mean by techno, why it's always the same beat?

Participant: Yeah, I mean, I get many differences of the synthesizers and a rhythm as a general, even in percussion and all that, but I would like to know, why you think that it never changed. The same bass drum like straight up.

Wolfgang Voigt: Because this is a heart of techno, you know? The main thing of techno is four-to-the-floor bass drum. If you leave that out, it's not techno anymore. This is, you know, this is the main idea. This is - how can I say? - this is a religion of techno, if you like.

It's actually improving each time from technical and musical standpoint, and ironically that's perhaps why I've stopped paying as much attention to his more recent work. As he hones in on his sound it also becomes a bit too predictable. His early work as The Field was often quite rough, even flat-out spotty, but there were always loops and sounds that grabbed my attention. Like in this very iffy track, I must of played the 2 minutes or so like 10x.

One of his first remixes:

Anyone familiar with his other aliases? I never really checked them out.

Edited by joshuatx

I never heard of those two songs - I'll have a listen.

I searched out some of his other aliases but couldn't find any music. Aside from Loops of Your Heart, which is quite easy to find. I haven't picked that up yet but intend to do so at some point. I've heard one or two tracks and it's very nice ambient music.

So this is out "officially" and in shops. Just listening to the record for the first time.

I don't understand - have people suddenly changed their minds about Axel? His last album got a lot of interest on here.

For me, he's one of my favourite artists so I'm always excited to hear new stuff. I haven't made my mind up about this yet though as I've only heard it once or twice. His stuff usually takes a while to click.
