is there a freeware alternative to this?

before, i've used extremely low bit rate mp3 mixdowns as an effect, but for a few years, this has been out:

i'm wondering if theres any freeware (or payware) out there that can hold its own against the shimmery sonic destruction that this plugin should be capable of.

bit reduction almost gets to 24kbps mp3, but no cigar.

please feel free to ask me to explain this better if my question isn't clear.

There's dtblkfx - http://rekkerd.org/dtblkfx/

dtblkfx_1_1_win.jpg

which allows spectral spearing to smush the sound into a similar effect from that of really low mp3 bit rate. Can't remember which setting it is, but have a play !

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

if you have Reaktor try the Denoiser in the Ez FFT Christmas Collection just keep the Learn button on and mess around with the threshold and ratio to get some pretty good mp3 degradation sounds. the parameters in the screenshot do a pretty good job on voice

SpecMonkyage? Good luck finding it though—it's pretty old.

is this applied to create a vintage sound in a way?

lol vintage realaudio stream styles

reaper could do this I'm pretty sure. Install the LAME codec and just render out your audio as an m3 with what ever settings you want.

you could use a bit decimator/crusher to get an "undecent" audio quality and then blast it through some fft/filter thing(modulated?) to get those artifacts/spectral blurs..

for instance...

TB TimeMachine

  Quote
It allows to simulate the effect of A/D and D/A aliasing, re-sampling, and bit reduction (both linear and mu-Law quantization).

http://www.toneboosters.com/tb-timemachine/

and afterwards..

Sp3ctr3

Sp3ctr3 is an FFT-based audio-mangling plug-in

go fiddle!

I don`t think Sp3ctr3 gonna give you that sound, you can get closer with dtblkfx, but IMHO TB Timemachine is the best samplerate reducer/ bitcrusher there is, also worth checking out is Decimort: http://www.d16.pl/index.php?menu=203 or look for multiband bitcrusher, there are a few free ones, go through those http://woolyss.com/chipmusic-plugins.php there must be something useable to be found.

the most difficult to understand plugin i've tried. i can flip thru presets thats about it. the gui isn't that intuitive. superfluous control mechanism, cryptic labels for effects. needs a short story to accompany it to even know what the plug does ;)

Well according to me from 6 years ago this was what did it ( http://forum.watmm.com/topic/22255-does-anyone-know-of-any-fftspectral-resampler-vsts/?p=461088 - scroll to post #6 )

according to me from 6 years ago, i stil would have given the same recommendation. Download the *now free* Anarchy FX pack, one of the plugins ( i forgot which one) is designed for intentional mp3 like artifiacts. Sounds less generic FFT and more just like a broken mp3

convoluter plugin off this page - http://anarchysoundsoftware.co.uk/anarchysoundsoftware/?page_id=7

Hah, it is a bit esoteric but that's half the fun!

Basically you can chain up to 8 different FFT shapers (the 8 different rows).

First you select the shaper type (the one that says like Contrast, Smear etc.), then more settings appear it's usually: Course frequency, Fine Frequency, volume (in decibels), the name of the effect, the amount of the effect in percentage.

oh fuck yeah those plugins are excellent. I'd forgot where I got them from and couldn't find them after reformatting many years ago. thanks for the link!

I wish I could find SpecMonkyage or whatever it was called though. It had a 'freeze' function which I abused the fuck out of when making Autechre soundalikes. I came up with something that sounded suspiciously like FLeure about 10 years ago using that plugin :emotawesomepm9:

Spectral Monkeyage:

the new PVOC pack by the guy who made soundhack can do what that FFT freeze plugin does but with about 5-6 more knobs of parameters. While that plugin is 'cool' i get really frustrated at someone who would literally only put one knob in an effect like that

These ones ? - http://people.bath.ac.uk/masrwd/pvplugs.html

But yeah the specMonkyage thankfully has more controls than that Brainfreeze one (anyone know the track they use in that Youtube demo by the way?):

those are the but they look like really old versions

check these out - http://www.soundhack.com/pvoc/

the pitch shifter alone is amazing, i don't think i've used a software pitchshifter that sounds as good in real-time besides antares harmony engine (a very underrated ignored plugin for doing midi or auto chord harmonies on incoming audio)

edit: these may not be the 'best' out there because I haven't used every spectral plugin available, but they are the most pleasurable to use and the easiest on the ear compared to plugins that perform similar functions.

the first eurorack modular synth kit/unit to have a granular pitch shifter in it was made by Makenoize based on a design by the guy who made soundhack

this is a great thread!

would have been even more awesome 10 years ago when I was trying to emulate LP5/EP7 sounds haha

that part in DMT always sounded to me like a midi triggered LFO with a small amount of glide between the LFO rate controlling a comb filter/delay or a basic flanger. Nice to hear the unmolested Shpongle track, it's helping me erase the memory of Simon Posford doing a really bad 80s guitar solo over the whole song when i saw them live
