I think they're referring to the photon's behavior, as opposed to actually thinking the photon has literal memory.

like limpy said, i doubt any of the researchers mean to seriously suggest that photons are conscious. "forget" is probably just a useful analogy for a change in the photon's behavior, gnome sane

if they don't use the correct words they are going to sound like idiots obviously. this still doesn't explain why they need to "remember" where they have been in order to go where they were going. surely they are just saying that the photons behavior is erratic for some unknown reason and hell fucked if i know why!

Keep in mind that the dense scientific jargon has been decoded to present to all of us non-scientists. Anthopomorphism--like metaphor in general--is a means of describing something in a way that is easy to understand. If any of us were to see that original paper, we wouldn't understand 80% of the words, let alone the concepts.
