Why do you hate mashed potatoes?

Recommended Posts

Guest Rulohead32

This is a topic to talk about things you don't understand why most of the people have a bad thought/opinion/attitude, either if you like them or not, but you just don't get why that thing specially is so bad seen by society.

I'll start with pop music. I don't get why many people says pop is cheap or bad, just because it's not "cool" enough for them. It's another music style like every of them, and if it's true that could be more simple than, let's say... jazz, in the end is one of the most popular genres and it has contributed a lot to electronic music. Even rock has so much in common with pop that you can't even tell which one came before, cause at the beginning it was all a single music genre.

Another thing is the pop singers. Ones can sing better than others (and some ones can be sluttier than others), but I also hate that people always relate the personal life of the singer, and her outside attitude, with the music they sing, or the quality of her voice.

Well, I just don't get why so many people here hate pop. But that's another story heh.

It's your turn. You can talk about any thing, not only music-related topics.

I hate pop music because it's autotuned, the singers rarely have any actual talent (most of their songs lyrics are written for them, the beats and production are done for them etc), and the artists are just a face and personality to the song, nothing more. That's why most live performances are lip synced. Because they don't have the singing ability they're actually selling on their albums. The media and entertainment industry simply create a buzz around these "artists" and the personality they're portrayed as in the media becomes the selling force.

It tricks people into identifying with the artists and then using that music as an identifying characteristic for themselves, to drive sales. It's evil and manipulative.

That seems like some pretty good reasons to hate pop music.

not all pop is autotuned.

On the other hand, you're right about the rest, but still, you are blaming the singers, not the actual pop music genre and even less the actual composers of the songs.

Try to make a catchy pop tune yourself, it's not so easy.

Oh I don't doubt it's difficult! That's why they have an entire studio composed of the singer, a vocal coach, an engineer, a mastering specialist, a writing team, a marketing team, album art designers, etc etc. To me that takes the artistry out of it and it becomes just a product to be packaged and sold!

Now, if the artists wrote their own music, made their own beats, etc and it WAS pop music, I would have no problem with that. I'm sure there are great examples of artists (even pop artists maybe) that do this and I'd love to hear it.

It being popular doesn't detract from the artistry, but there seems to be a heavy correlation between pop and non artistry based on the factors I wrote already.

Most pop music in the 80's was pretty great. If pop music was still of that same quality, I would probably listen to it a lot. So for me it has nothing to do with "I'm too cool for it", but most modern pop music just sounds pretty terrible to me.

Also... it's funny how it's the music with the most advertising, that gets most popular. These days it seems not to be about the quality of the music, when something gets popular, but about how much advertising money that is behind it and how much it gets played on the radio/TV/youtube/whatever.

That is not say; "huuurrr everybody is stupid because they don't listen to the IDUMZ" or anything stupid like that, but I genuinely don't think there are lot of modern pop artists, that have talent (of course there are exceptions, though).

Probably. I'm sad I was born in 89'.

I missed a great, cocaine fueled era. =(

I'm totally OK with artists who only decide to sing and have their songs composed by others (other things are that the song in question is a shit or bad composed). And I'm totally OK with artists who only decide to compose because they can't sing.

And I'm totally OK with artists who decide that, as they don't sing so well than others, they have to supply that with more charisma and spectacle, like Lady Gaga (but I personally think Gaga doesn't sing bad).

And I'm totally OK with 80's kids and 90's kids, cause it's normal they find those years's pop music better, cause they've lived it, but then respect my opinion because I'm a 00's kid.

I think a lot of the hate boils down to the industry commoditizing the artists life and that becoming more important than the music. So many people buy into the sensationalism and like you've said, it's difficult for others (such as myself) to detach the constant media barrage regarding that person's personal life from the music itself. Realistically they ARE packaging the two things together, that's what drives sales, so I think it's difficult for some people to make a seamless separation.

That being said!

Something I hate! When a superior/boss is highly incompetent and far less educated than his or her underlings!

Yeah I have to agree, but idk man if people just forgot about media and those people's boring life (except Adele; does anyone know what she even does when she's not singing?), if people just forgot about that and just listened to the music they like, even if it's pop, it all would be better.

I can't stand that, when it's meant to personally attack someone.

There are times where irony and sarcasm are pretty funny though, IMO.

It just sounded better in the 80's.

Oh lol!

Still! The 80s seems like it would have been great! Big parties, more liberal atmosphere re drugs etc, crazy hair, crazy clothes, some good music. Women looked better too IMO. Not all plastic surgeried Barbie doll covered in makeup perfectly shaped or drawn on eyebrows etc.

Yeah that's my next thing I hate:

Cut and paste/cookie cutter girls of the 2000s.

I often wonder whether there's any meaningful discussion to be had on the topic. Let's say you have two hypothetical listeners, one takes into account the whole context (whether it's being produced or marketed by some very expensive corporate machinery or painstakingly produced using free and open source software in your parents' basement) when judging the value of the music, the other just goes by the sound. Which listener is actually being more shallow? I think that's arguably just a matter of perspective.

Yes; it depends, for me the guy who is taking everything in context is being more loyal to reality, where it all is also taken as a whole (sound & appearance).

edit: @ manmower..

It's a matter of perspective, yes. I believe you need to contextualize music or any art or literature for that matter. It gives you insight into the writer/musician etc perspective and the backdrop upon which they probably formed their ideas.

That being said, if I were to take most pop music at face value I'd still dismiss it as garbage. How many times can you honestly listen to "ridin' in my Lamborghini" "shake that ass" " I'm so rich" or some other derivative before you honestly just want to never hear music again?

Pop music is so redundant and repetitive, that's the nature of pop music. The driving force behind it is marketing a certain lifestyle to listeners, to make them idolize the artists and buy into everything they are selling, IE the clothing lines, the cars, the albums, "sponsored by coca cola" events, etc.

This is partially why I like less-than-mainstream electronic music. Because it's not trying to sell me anything but the music (usually).

I don't get why some couples get embarassed when they are confused for siblings.

If someone mistakes you and your significant other for siblings, that person doesn't think you two are fucking. And when that person realizes that you two are fucking, he/she will realize you aren't actually siblings.

I don't get embarrassed. I figure girls usually ask if my gf is my sister because they're interested in me and just testing the waters. lol
