kayne might not rap for shit but i'm just glad Jay-z isn't on the album, i can't stand that fuck, he has absolutly no humour, just talks fake boring shit with "uhu, yeah" inbetween on some producers track and does nothing

Madlib and J Dilla spend* all their time making music, talking about music, listening to music, crate-digging, etc. There is no hype, no pretense, just the music.

Musically, they do everything themselves. They're true craftsman (IMO) whereas Kayne is more of an entrepreneur.

Kanye West came to prominence as a beat-maker/producer. Jay-Z and his label used tracks on albums like The Dynasty and Beanie Sigel's The Truth. Early Kanye West production ("This Can't Be Life" - Jay-Z, "The Truth" - Beanie Sigel, "Ain't No Love (Heart of the City)" - Jay-Z) is absolutely brilliant.

I think those criticising his production and saying he isn't a producer must not have heard those tracks.

His production back then was quality, but his fans (not talking about you specifically) overstate its originality. Soul samples and pitch shifted vocals were old hat by the time Kanye came around. There's nothing he did in his early period that Pete Rock, RZA, and DJ Premier hadn't already done better.

Yeah I mean Kayne was definitely quite capable on an MPC or ASR-10 or SP-1200 or whatever he was on. But I personally know a dozen or so beatmakers who are as good or better as he was when he was making his own stuff, not to mention the dozens of random dudes on YouTube who put him to absolute shame.

In short: yes he has some measure of talent as a beatmaker but nothing special and certainly nothing warranting his level of success.

To be fair though, is there such a thing as unfair success? It's not too silly to think that people get the success they earn, right? Even if he is only an average 'beatmaker'?

You weren't necessarily saying this, but it got me wondering nevertheless.

Ok, let me put it differently: artists get the success they earn. I really wasn't going for some all encompassing deep philosophical statement here. Just that when it comes to mr west, there's prolly a reason why he has the success he has. So it is warranted one way or another. Pretty trivial statement, or so i assumed.

And note that warranting means, imo, something different to justify. Perhaps his success is warranted by his narcissism inspiring all those countless others narcissists on the planet? It would be justified, imo, if he was a good musician. ( just making up semantics on the fly. Here, btw)

Well it is logically necessary that if someone has success then they gained it somehow (and thus earned it according to whatever arbitrary criteria they were measured by to gain it).
