Planet Rephlex - Interview with Grant

ok, and how many albums has he released since those statements?

none but that's not the point. the point is that grant was basically lying. lying might be too strong of a word, so i'll fall back on 'bullshitting'. i mean lying and bullshitting has been rich's thing forever so it shouldn't be any surprise that grant would do it too when he talks about rich. he said rich never said he'd put out an album, and from my point of view rich has said that he would, numerous times. so my point is that grant BSing in his response to a question about rich kind of calls his whole response into question, doesn't it?

he did release about 7 hours of music in the 00s but whatever....

wats your point, exactly? we were talking about the specific claim of there being another aphex or otherwise richard produced album. yeh we all know hes made music before. thats why anyone gives a fuck to begin with. doy.

I'd be saddened to not hear some of the tracks he's played live on youtube in a finished mastered form. Happy I got to hear em' in the first place, but saddened that someone who makes such awesome music doesn't want release it because they don't want to deal with expectations and fame. Seems like a cop out imo.

Why play DJ sets or do interviews still if you don't care about work, money or fame?

Go listen to new Rephlex albums regardless of who it is. And to Leo Anibaldi's Void!

yes and yes. Rephlex back catalog has enough braindance to suffice those inclined. Void? Insanely amazing album. X-Asp? fantastic release. Drop Acid Not Bombs? Goofy and charming. Some may never reach the ecstatic heights of some rdj, but enough to tickle the mind and smile

This is the fckuing truth.

Worst case scenario is we have to wait until Richard dies to hear his stuff. Hopefully i'm still alive in 30-40 years

What about him dying would cause more music to be released? It's not like all of your unreleased works are forcibly dumped into the public domain upon expiring. If his kids are anything like him they probably won't be interested in dragging his music out into the light either.

All right. Whatever. He's not going to release music anymore. Whatever his decision, it's up to him. But saying that he won't release new music because the anticipation is too high or because he's done everything he thinks he's capable of doing--those are pussy excuses. I'm not saying this to badger anyone into releasing anything. It's just fucking lame to say things like that; that's all.

The last time I spoke to him he was ready to go with an 8 track 4xLP. The problem with it was that the last track was something like half an hour long which meant it would have to be at 33rpm while all the other sides were cut at 45rpm and he didn't want to release anything that played at 33rpm. He said he was exploring new ways of resolving the problem..... 16" vinyl / Concentric grooves that play edge to middle then back to the edge again, overcoming centrifugal force, spherical formats etc. that kind of thing.

Its interesting that Grant accuses Steve Becket of lying to us (in 2007 on BBC6 he stated a new album was coming out early the following year).

Apart from AFX, I'm really not very fond of liars,

Old rephlex mixes (cylob, d'arcangelo, luke vibert, rephlex master control) on this french blog, check the Wetransfer links :

Wow, thanks for that! Don't bother with the Luke Vibert mix (not the Vibert Simmonds one), it's exactly the same as the 'Back To The Basics (Hiphop Mix)' he did in 1999, but in pretty bad quality. The mix is one of my fave hiphop mixes ever, so you definitely want to check out the better quality one (it's probably online).

The other mixes I haven´t heard before, will be sitting down for this! Too bad the quality is crap, but it'll do. Must be around '99/'00 this was broadcasted?

I doubt Aphex has made / is making enough dough from just live sets and catalog sales to be set for life, income-wise. As soon as they figure out how to sell an album and actually make money from it, I think they will do so. Perhaps a re-release of something old, or perhaps new music.

I think what they are trying to avoid is releasing something just because they are `supposed` to, having it be the talk of the internet for like 1 week, and then it going away / everyone just downloading it. I can see the idea of making music `just to play around the house` making sense if the only other alternative is releasing it only to have it be stolen 1 million times and complained about the rest.

You're forgetting the insane amounts of money prior to him "retiring" from his "prime" era, and assuming he invested the money wisely, is easily living off the interest.

It's not about the money - it never has been. Richard will release whatever he wants to because he wants to release it, not because it will be profitable or anything - of course, anything he releases these days tends to turn a profit simply because he did it - look at the Tuss releases - probably sold really well due to just the internet hype of it possibly being Richard behind them, added to the fact it was good music to boot.

I think he's happy with DrukQs being the last official Aphex Twin album, and Analord being the last AFX release. He's got nothing to prove to anyone. He's done with releasing anything else. He's having too much fun just playing music, traveling, and getting paid to do it. Who wouldn't?

If anyone could ID the Rephlex Master Control (Grant) mix, the track that's playing from 1h01m to 1h05m sounds completely lush. Was just skipping through it and this immediately caught my attention.

Nevermind, it's Derrick May - A Relic Mix. Good mix overall anyway!

Was posted in another topic as well but thought it should be noted here as well: www.rephlex.com is now redirecting to their discogs page, no more digital shop. I'm going to be optimistic here and guess there's something sweet coming up.

Hahah, Mister Joyrex. You're correct at this moment in time, yes he's having (had) a wonderful time playing music, touring and having fun. He's toured plenty and played many shows which is really cool of him. I've seen him a few times myself in London. Both times very different and eclectic. Very much appreciated Mr James, thank you.

Problem is (though I doubt its a problem as such lol) where doe's he go from here? He can't carry on just playing dj sets as he will turn into a nostalgia act. Thats a fact. And no way thats gonna happen. So no more tours.....unless there is more music. There has to be more music.

Either you are correct Joyrex and now this is the end. Or soon soon there will be a new beginning. Its either one of the other. And the more people higher up in the echelons of 'being in the know' keep banging on about him being finished. The more i'm inclined to think that he hasn't.

Or maybe i'm fucking slightly crazy....(I know the answer to that question)
