talk to me about dub techno

a lot of the modern stuff i don't really like as it sound to much like people trying to emulate a certain sound, like the atheus track is nice but it could be anyone. deepchord i like some of it, imax and convextion (and his aliases) i quite like

edit: i think my problem with a lot of modern modern dub techno stuff (and this probably applied to all music) is it sounds like dubtechno written by people who really want to make dub techno and only listen to dubtechno.

also maurizo ftw, my 3 favourite tracks of his and perfect for the summer

i think what i like about the above tracks is the attitude, big solid beat with nice delicate sounds all reverbed and delayed, very hypnotic and rhythmic

Yagya I find awesome, and Basic Channel super overrated.

dude wtf - how can you not just get the groove of this slice of sound

Maurizio is only half of Basic Channel?

Also, there is stuff that touches me on a deep, humane level such as the works of Rhythm and Sound.

I guess it really depends on my mood..,

Basic Channel's initial releases are a bit too minimal and repetitive for me to actively listen too, but you have to be aware of the state of techno music when their music was being put out in 1993. Even within the context of minimal techno Basic Channel's productions were quite groundbreaking. Often the originators of a genre are not the objectively the best. Dub is similar in that regard: King Tubby's work is often less interesting to me than say, that of his proteges Scientist and Mad Professor, but the entire basis of the genre stems from his experiments and methods in the studio. You can't ignore that.

Haha, I phrased it differently in my post, but feel the same way. I much prefer the music that was put out on Chain Reaction than their own material. The only releases I've enjoyed out of their various aliases are Quadrant Dub and the Quadrant EP.

Quadrant Dub is great, we agree there.

sometimes it can be difficult to appreciate the work of those who have laid the foundations, when more recent artists have built on those foundations in newer, fresher ways. what was groundbreaking in the past can seem boring compared to what's established and current today. I think that's what's happening here.

I'm just getting into Yagya btw, I've been curious about his stuff for a long time. I haven't been listening to music nearly as often as before lately so I need something new to be obsessed with.

I find Basic Channel works even without the context of them being pioneers, their music has tons of character. I don't know if it's their unique style or also down to the tools it was made with or whatever (I'm always amazed by how well some people can pinpoint equipment from just listening to a record), but it has an edge, and a variety throughout their discography, both of which are missing in much of the dub-techno-by-numbers. Some of the new stuff is frankly just too well-made and samey.

I think that might also be the reason why Rhythm Of Snow is still such a cult record, even though plenty of people don't 'get' why it's anything special compared to his other albums. It's grittier, despite all the Yagya smoothness buried in there, it has this adventurous, unpremeditated vibe to it. As if he captured it on a record at just the right time, before the moment was gone, and then afterwards you can recreate it but it's never quite the same as the first time around.

Anyway, I say that as someone who only discovered Basic Channel maybe four or five years ago and still think it's pretty much the most interesting dub techno out there, period.

That's not to say the context doesn't help. Sure the first couple of 12-inches were almost straight techno, but it was still only 1993 by the time they put out the Lyot Rmx, that is one deep track. One memory that will probably stay with me forever is, the winter around the time I had just discovered them I was driving my brother back to uni through a big snow shower (the kind where they tell you to stay home unless you really need to be somewhere) and I had the first BCD playing. He wasn't into it at all and when Lyot Rmx came on he said: "How stoned do you have to be to come up with this shit?". And I was trying to give him some context, you know trying to nudge him into appreciating it more I guess, but then somehow we ended up imagining these two guys sitting in the basement of a record store in Berlin in 1993, stoned out of their minds and trying to communicate with aliens via dub techno. Laughed our asses off all the way.

Up for sale as of today, the first vinyl pressing reissue of Fluxion's "Vibrant Forms I" on Type. I'm no salesman, and it's not my absolute favorite or anything, but I thought some of you might be interested. I bagged mine today on transparent orange 2xLp. I'm looking forward to it.
