Limpy: I teach/taught at a few universities/colleges/community colleges for all sorts of history-related classes. It's really frustrating and ultimately a shame that so many students enter college unprepared with critical thinking and analytical skills, not even considering the worst problem which is having a full command of English.

That's rad. And yeah I think high schools are a failure. Most of my teachers found a way to make really interesting stuff boring. For instance, I loved math until I got to high school. I was actually studying to become a teacher but I just kinda succumbed to all the apathy I encountered.

Cool, so how old are you? Limpyloo. How old are you? What's your age? I was wondering how old you are? The answer is simple. Someone who considered being a teacher should be able to answer it. How old are you? :music:

Look, I'm sorry for making jokes about your antisemitism.

I'll suck your dick if that'll make things better. :music:

antisemitism? Didn't you realise that I have spoken in support of the existence of a Jewish state? I support it. Moshe Dayan is my hero. A Jew is my hero. Did you realise that? I think you didn't. And you keep ignoring a simple question. The question is: "how old are you?" You can't answer such a question? It's not like you can be personally identified via google by revealing your two digit age isn't it? It's not like I'm asking for DOB, address, bank details etc. It's a two digit number. So come on LimpyLoo! How old are you?
No offense man, but if I overheard this at a party, I would probably try to rescue LL or run away quickly.

Well, I guess that heap of closed Chunky threads is there for anyone who wants to make up their own mind.

The guy's been replying to my posts for a while, quite rudely imo. I ignored him before. He made an accusation and I defended myself. His refusal to answer the question is proof of spiritual, intellectual, and moral cowardice.

What kids should be taught?

Not sure. But at least they should be taught how to learn new stuff and that it can be fun to do new stuff. If kids can do that, the only thing grown ups have to do is facilitate their hunger for learning new stuff. IMO, the idea that kids have to be prepared for some future goal is hurting the process. It was for me anyways. I hated school from an early age. It was just like going to prison.

apple™ studies - kids should be able to navigate comfortably within the world that's increasingly infused with those wonderful apple™ products that make our lives so much more fun and engaging.

Information processing, critical thinking and analysis. Information is plenty and readily available and kids need the skill to process that and critically evaluate it. It's far more important than learning some trivial data that could easily be looked up on their ubiquitous smartphones.

the biggest illusion is yourself

Not sure there's a need for business building at school. It seems like one of those things were some people have the knack and others don't. Computer science should be a larger part of young education. The way it can relate to many other subjects seems broad enough that all can find some usefulness out of it. Computational thinking. If we had more of them it'd be great.

How to meditate, deal with stress and anxiety - how to be happy.

I also agree with the introduction of understanding the damaging effects of porn too.

the grammar of their own native language. this is particularly a problem in the US, but i think even more of a problem in the UK. students only have a passive understanding of how to speak and write English. they only tend to begin to understand English when they learn other languages, and in the US and UK, there are fewer and fewer people doing this each decade. this isn't restricted to English-speakers, but we tend to be more monolingual, so it's more noticeable.

at least in the US students will sit down and learn different parts of speech and how to put them together ('sentence diagramming'). most UK students don't seem to have ever done this.

I agree with Computer Programming, Basic Economics and Self Sustainability.

There also was this fascinating article about a teacher in Mexico who, instead of teaching children the approved curriculum, instead opted to let the children figure out the problems themselves. Results were astounding:

The article basically suggests that current methods stem from the Industrial Revolution and aren't relevant any more.

teach the youngin's how to spot reliable (and unreliable) sources of information

Any time I see a grown man/woman posting a link to some obviously bullshit Daily Mail-esque article or unsubstantiated web source, especially about some sort of issue like religion/ immigration/ anything that tends towards knee-jerk scaremongering, it's beyond  .

Also, maybe some stuff about the fact that a lot of the most socially harmful acts (not necessarily crimes in the legal sense) are comitted by corporations and those in power, although maybe that's a bit full on for primary/grade school level. *removes criminology hat*

Also, kids should be taught to just say no to idm at an early age. It wrecks lives.

you guys are all saying "kids should learn THIS" without thinking about how difficult it is to teach kids these things. i remember being in elementary school and teachers would try to teach us "critical thinking" by having us fill out diagrams with the "steps to thinking critically." i learned fuck-all from that and that's the sort of program you get when you say vague shit like "we should teach our kids critical thinking." you know who actually taught me critical thinking? when i was in the 7th grade, mr. bradley, my science teacher, told us gargoyles were real. he showed us a skull and told us its taxonomic classification. it went on for a couple of months until he revealed he was putting on a ruse. he told us to always question what people told us. never to accept something as just true because of authority. he also screened cosmos for us. we need more mr. bradleys instead of vague curricula that, in practice, turn into repetitive worksheets that teach our children nothing.
