should be interesting if it's like the recent one-off tracks he's been releasing.

Omg. Yes.

Beck has signed to Capitol Records, who will release his first album of all new material since 2008's universally acclaimed Modern Guilt in February 2014.

The new record, titled Morning Phase, has been described as a companion piece of sorts to Beck's 2002 classic Sea Change. Featuring many of the same musicians who played on that record (who are also currently accompanying him live) -Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner -- Morning Phase harkens back to the stunning harmonies, song craft and staggering emotional impact of that record, while surging forward with infectious optimism.

Morning Phase caps off a yearlong creative tear that traces back to the December of 2012 release of the lavishly packaged and illustrated Song Reader featuring sheet music for 20 new original Beck songs. The project quickly took on a life of its own, with musicians from across the globe recording their own interpretations, as well as Beck's own special shows featuring eclectic lists of co-conspirators putting their own stamp on the compositions. Following that, Beck re-imagined David Bowie's classic "Sound + Vision" with a hand-selected 160-piece orchestra... culminating with a groundbreaking interactive 360-degree filming of a live performance of the track. More recently, this summer brought us three rabidly received singles released digitally and on 12-inch vinyl ("Defriended," "I Won't Be Long," Gimme"), and September saw Beck custom-creating two performance pieces for Doug Aitken's Station to Station series of transient happenings, all interspersed with his current run of live shows--touted by reviewers the world over as among the very best of his career.

Complete track listing, exact release date, and further information re: Morning Phase will be released as it is confirmed.

modern guilt is a piece of shit. dangermouse laid a fat fucking egg on this record, no surprise. flat shit-awful production that sounds like it's being sprayed out of a garden hose. no stars.

Any other Watmmers out there that would like another Beck album in the vein of Midnight Vultures? Of course another Odelay/Mellow Gold sounding release would be a dream. Love all of Beck's material, but I've always had a thing for his more eclectic kid-like weird stuff (like stereopatheticsoulmanure)

yeah, i was scrolling down to post "where is the companion album to 'midnight vultures?'"

i know we'll most likely never get it, that was just one of beck's many phases, but that's my favorite of his by a decent margin.

the album title sounds hopeful though, no? i mean, if it was "Morning Phaze", i'd start celebrating, but "Morning Phase" is promising enough I guess- sounds like it could be Sea Changes meets The Information.

Rolling stone interview:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/blogs/alternate-take/becks-long-road-to-morning-phase-20131121

Pitchfork summary:

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Beck shared some details about his upcoming LP, Morning Phase, which is out in February through Capitol. As noted, the record features many of the musicians from 2002's Sea Change, including Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker (currently of Atoms for Peace), Smokey Hormel, and Roger Joseph Manning Jr. Beck described the record as coming from the tradition of "California music" and said, "I'm hearing the Byrds, Crosby Stills and Nash, Gram Parsons, Neil Youngthe bigger idea of what that sound is to me."

Per Rolling Stone, song titles include "Wave", "Unforgiven", "Blue Moon", "Say Goodbye", "Waking Light," "Blackbird Chain", and "Country Dawn". The latter three were recorded in 2011 in Nashville at Jack White's Third Man Records. (Those sessions also yielded a single for Third Man.) Beck produced the record, while his father David Campbell once again handled the brass and string arrangements.

Since 2008's Modern Guilt, Beck has also recorded a different full-length, which he's been sharing through his recent singles seriesincluding "Gimme", "Defriended", and "I Won't Be Long". He says he hopes to have that album out at some point, and is also halfway done with yet another record, to be released later in 2014.

His recent singles don't sound anything like Sea Change though, which is my favourite Beck album, before Mutations. Always preferred his acoustic stuff. Excited.

Guest MastaN8

So I checked this out and its pretty awesome. i mean after the solid singles recently its weird to hear sea change-y stuff. If you loved sea change you'll totally dig it. Same sort of arrangements and Instruments... For me Beck's always teasing the more midnight vultures style at the very end of his laid back albums like this one. Just gets me juicing for some abstract electro Beck....

Apparently the pipes are broken. The song is pretty good.

Beck is te shit, love the information and guero as well

Modern guilt had some surprisingly great songs marred by the worst production ever
