We're told he's one of the best producers by major labels with a lot of clout financially. The fact is he's not. It's irrelevant if multi-millionaire ARs and label execs and their clients "consider him one of the best."

TImbaland rejuvenated the use of more unusual percussion sounds in mainstream hip-hop in the late 90s and early 00s but the ego, arrogance, and complete lack of progress makes me miffed that he's got a thread. He's actually become worse - nothing he's made in the last few years is recognizable as him, let alone notable in sound.
Don't get me wrong, he's made some good tracks but in terms of his contributions - adding unusual percussion sounds and layered, short bursts of samples into rhythmic loops - is something many other producers did years before he came around. DJ Premier paved the way for Timbaland's work in the early 90s but cutting up samples and beats in a far more experimental manner long before Timbland took some Bhangra percussion loops and threw some keyboard preset beats over it.
1994:
Also the guy is a complete fucking asshole and idiot, wouldn't even acknowledge this sample (if you can call it that - he didn't even flip it, just stole an istrumental track). Timbaland_plagiarism_controversy

Few more things, he's tacked on his name to work done by his protege Danja, who has made far more great tracks in the last 5 years or so than Timbaland himself. The Neptunes and even Kanye West have contributed far better production discographies than Timbaland has, there's a slew of other producers I could name as well. None of them, not even Kanye, are as arrogant and overrated.

Also, he's claimed to have invented dubstep and UK bass in general. He's also taken entire songs, barely remixed them, then release them as "Timbaland featuring [insert original artist here]" which is so fucking obnoxious and shameless. I've mentioned it it before, as i mentioned here. He's not almost IDM, he's almost EDM. But I won't say that because that would insult EDM.

DJ Premier paved the way for a lot of people. That guy is a legend.

I'm aware of the sampling controversy surrounding him and his ego. It's unfortunate that the dude is such an asshole. However, I find Timbaland's beats to be far more interesting and rhythmic than other pop and r&b tunes. I don't know of any other producers in mainstream music who are using field recordings and lots of handmade percussion. It does make a difference. I feel like he makes the vast majority of producers in those genres look like morons. I do think Kanye is far more arrogant and overrated. Yeezus is horrible. Has everyone seen his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel recently? The guy is out of his mind.

He definitely has a sound that he's been sticking with, for the most part, though the same could be said for so many artists. Thomas Koner and Rod Modell have been making the same music for 20 years now, with subtle changes over time. And I don't think he's gotten worse. Those two tracks from the new Justin Timberlake album are pretty nasty.

I like the sound of his productions, but after the plagiarism thing I constantly wonder who he's ripping off.

example:

sounds like Nautilis

I admit I was overly critical, I wasn't being very objective at all. Also, I retract my statement that Kanye is better: I think he's an apt producer but he relied on fairly traditional sampling and beatmaking methods.

There's some substance to much of Timbaland's work, in fact I'm realizing 2007 was really just a bad year for him overall. I had no idea he did the JT album recently: not a huge fan but I admit the production is decent, and very, very good compared to most mainstream pop and hip-hop. He seems to have completely avoided the trap fad too, which is nice. Thanks for posting this.

He's got a great ear for interesting rhythms and catchy melodies. I know nothing of the supposed plagiarism not the reports of him being an asshole...but he must get along with some artists decently, given as much as he works with some of them.

I've always loved the subtle stuff he adds into the tracks, to me that proves that he's not just fucking around to make money. In Nigga What, Nigga Who, the female voice repeating 'n. n. n. n.' is a wonderful example. There's tons of little stuff all over JT's Futuresex/Lovesounds. The vocal swells (and varying rhythms that follow them) in the verses of Promiscuous. Also the way the keyboard line morphs into a guitar version at the end of that track...honestly, I'd be hard-pressed to name a better pop song of the last decade. Does that make it relevant to IDM? Meh, not exactly, but I very often enjoy Timbaland's production and writing skills.

his role as a producer has become increasingly irrelevant, which I think is principally due to the fact that he's a decadent asshole who does not challenge himself creatively. there are definitely some dope timbaland beats and he certainly has a distinct sound but it's more than obvious his lust for riches has corrupted his artistic development and I think that really shows. the new timberlake just sounds like a defunct rehash of futuresex, and I can't think of any other recent timbaland production that didn't sound like this. there's a difference between cultivating a distinct sound and the stagnant process of imitating yourself. some artists really just become tribute bands eventually.

since 2006, he hasnt release anything as good as before, but from 95 to 06, hes one of the most unique producer in the business imo. I really like what he does considering what his audience is..

[edit] when i was 16 the only music i had access to was pop music, i was not as lucky or intelligent enough or genetic enough to be predisposed to happen upon idm until much much later, in which case i am still stunted in my engagement with life and art, mostly due to choosing to be malnourished or poor environment, lack of education, genetics, too many chromisomes, being an idiot, wearing hand me downs, buck teeth, water on the brain, whatever.
