How do you explore the Internet?

Recommended Posts

Like.. how do you find new stuff? Most of my things are found through online communities stuff.. (which is mostly reddit at the moment, has been 4chan in the past but that's a total shithole at the moment has always been a total shithole).

So, newssites? Google search? other search tubes? Some new way of exploration I have never heard of?

I'd like to break free of some routines.

Currently, I mostly use the Last.fm suggestions system. When I like an artist, I look at the smiliar artists. I also use quite a lot the "neighbor" option, and look over the most listened artists for the people who have similar tastes with me.

Gmail, Google News, Detroit News, Detroit Freepress, Rotten Tomatoes, Mlive, WDIV, Watmm, Fairway Drugs, The Wine Garden, Merchants Fine Wine (last 3 for craftbeers they may have received), Dusty Grooves, a few other store, music, art sites depending on need.

I suck at internets really.

Thanks user487363530. And user4873635301. Now 48736353001.

In addition to all of the above, I also like blogs. A lot of people blog about programming, security, and so forth. I'm not that into it myself but I find it entertaining. through those blogs I also get links to any number of other sites and then I browse those.

also go to WDFN, 97.1 The Ticket, 105.1 Detroit Sports for various sports programming during the day.

VRAY for C4D forum at times.

What are you looking for or hoping to find?

Vice sometimes has news stories which might surprise you

The Duncan Trussell Family hour is an amazing podcast sometimes (the Bolleli/Habib ep was very good)

Maybe you could explore music on Soundcloud - start with a search string and then jump from one thing to the next until you find something

Wikipedia is good for an introduction to a subject that interests you/an overview, then you could Google to find dedicated sites on the subject if there are particular topics you want to explore

If you follow people who interest you on Twitter, sometimes they point you towards something that they like

If I like a musician I like to explore people they've collaborated with or remixed, cover artists (visual) etc.

Pop on second life or something and voice chat to strangers

There's lots to read about in the WATMM forums - long film, music, book, game threads...

"Whoa! Check it out! RO-BIGH-DUHS!"

sigh.. "That's Ribena.."

I used to find more interesting things out of curiosity (clicking through wikipedia, searching past page 1 of google results) before things like last.fm, buzzfeed, stumbleupon, etc. I come here partly because I still find so many new things via other users. There's a sense of community. I still like lastfm and spotify (and google news) but beyond that I'm actually ditching other sites: I quit reading pitchfork daily after 8 years because it was so fucking predictable and dull.

If you're really bored and want to dig through the past, go to a large library and page through old books - many of which probably haven't been scanned and uploaded to tumblr...or browse through a big thrift or antique store. Some of the most fascinating music I've seen in $1 record collections or cassette collections - and then you can bring google into the mix by looking it up and seeing recommendations via that.

One of the funny things about the surface of the internet is that "obscure" and "underground" things can become instantly accessible and shared extensively. It's like a false sense of new and original content.

totally agree - some of best books and music have found by chance in second hand places

My daily staples are WATMM, BBC News, FB, Netflix, Sky Movies Now, Saintsweb (my teams fan forum page) and ATS (I'm not a conspiracy theorist but it can be amusing/entertaining to browse).

Sometimes I find myself endlessly cycling through them. I need more interesting sites to throw into the mix.

Oh yeah and ofc I do random Youtube journeys
