yeah that was pretty mean, she did end up with the performance of her career though. swings and round-abouts.

i once read a book of his all about how difficult it was for him to make his first film, how hard it was to get money he needed, how impossible it seemed that he would ever be able to get access to everything he needed, etc and how fucking depressing it all was for him. one would think that initial artistic experience in the business would have instilled in him some basic humility and empathy for struggling artists. but I can't say I'm surprised.

They look great in that compilation. And I'm tempted to say I quite enjoy them in movies. But used sparingly and for a surreal effect that's reflected in subtext or dialogue. Just having two characters talk idly with crazy dolly-zoom is a director being a dick.

Saying that, I like the dolly scene from Goodfellas. One of my favourites. The subtext, that the gangsters are closing-in on the characters, isn't as heavy but it works.

Oh, and Hitchcock loved it. So yeah, it's all good.
