Been reading more and more cases of people being asked to leave due to this kind of thing, and I think this kind of debate is going to get more and more relevant pretty soon.

What do you lot think?

Personally, I would not be bothered. Justification: many people take photographs in public places (including in restaurants).

The only exception would be if the patron was intentionally filming / photographing me, without my consent (basically "being a dick"). For the general, average and 'normal' intended use for Google Glass, I'm fine with it.

I'm in the same boat as you. If the person is just using the tech for regular purposes, it's no skin off my back.

Like you said though, if they were intentionally being a dick then yeah, it's that intent that would bother me.

I wouldn't like it if someone shoved a video camera in my face either, but if I was in the background while someone was filming it wouldn't make me think twice. I don't know.

I really think it's the intent that changes everything.

as it is now it's just too visible and obvious so you kinda know if you're potentially being filmed. but it's quite clear that it's heading towards smaller, more powerful and more accessible devices that will become practically invisible in some years, black mirror s01e03 basically.

also lol just noticed these things cost $2000USD +

In principle I'm generally OK with it, but living in SF I've seen a lot of the Google folks wearing them, and it immediately makes me feel weird. I think it just triggers some kind of "you are being watched" feeling that makes you feel uncomfortable. Its kind of like when you can tell someone is holding up their camera recording video... They hold it a certain way... You immediately notice it and try to avoid them (at least I do).

It doesnt help that everyone I've seen wearing them look smug as fuck. You notice it, they notice you noticing it, and they get this smug look on their face like "yeah, that's right... I've got Glass." Kind of like someone wearing an obnoxious article of clothing just to be noticed... It comes off the same way.

man I really hope that this concept goes the way of the segway, where the only assholes you see wearing them are security guards in malls

but then it becomes a matter of trust, can you 'trust' a stranger at a restaurant who has one not to be filming you? At least with a video camera or cellphone you can mostly tell if someone is filming you, maybe not recording you with audio only. To me the uncertainty of 'am i being recorded ?' with something like a google glass is far worse. I really hope more businesses start banning them. IT maybe seems like a small jump from what we already have but i think it could enable some very bad trends. i wouldn't be surprised if someone is already designing some kind of lie detector app based off facial muscles and body language, does the google glass have thermal detection ability or night vision? I'm interesting from a technology point of view or where it could lead in terms of augmented reality ways of interacting with real environments, but the psychological impact seems like it could be pretty drastic.

I think whilst maybe not in this format, in the end these devices will be ubiquitous and any initial backlash or hipster restaurant media stunt will be swept away by this. Life recording devices and augmented reality overlays are handy, the problem comes when unconnected organisations can tap into everyone's feeds. Sure you will catch random people doing and saying the wrong thing and the consequences for them and society are perhaps socially chilling, but it's gonna come.

but how would you know if the person is/is not filming you? people who are dicks are usually more and smarter than 'the average and normal' folks

personally i'm against it (which means it will take off) because it's just another thing that will distract people when they should be paying attention to real life

it seems that some people here aren't aware that with Google Glass you have to

1. verbally, and audibly tell Google Glass to start recording (which you would be able to hear, if you were the subject being recorded)

2. point your line of sight in the direction of the subject being filmed, in much the same way you would with any camera.

So you absolutely would be aware that you are being recorded. Having said all that though, I did say "Google Glass (and similar) devices" which doesn't preclude even more compact devices which do not require some kind of audible command or direct line of sight for recording.

I definitely do agree with the smug factor though, as Kcinsu mentioned - can totally see people having a "awwww yeah dats rite boiiii, BAM Google Glass" look on their face.

So it's projecting onto the inside of the dome in front of her face. Would be nice having peripheral view.

On one hand Google Glass just seems like another thing for people with attention defict disorder, why can't you just use your 5 senses? Do you always need augmented facts? Use your imagination why don't ya? However the thing that really makes me want to try it is for language translation, then it makes sense for it to be in your face when you are talking to people.

Better.

Yeah the google translate app for mobile is already super useful, but other than that I can't see any other uses for it that would require anything other than occassionaly (as opposed to permanently) wearing the glasses

It's inevitable people will be able to record or even construct whatever they want. We'll just have to find a way to deal with it. Maybe through social convention, law and/or a paradigm shift in technology use.

A lot of people can have their camera phones ready within 10 seconds anyway...

You broke it!

This will create a generation of supremely innovative happy slappers / Knockout artistes. Can't wait.

Also, I hope this leads to all of us wearing masks at all times like in The Private Eye, or the videophone bit in Infinite Jest.
