Good luck to Facebook

Recommended Posts

Did anyone else commit social suicide() this holiday season? I've gotten so sick of all the pish people post with such earnest and I just can't justify the amount of time it has and will continue to suck out of my short existence, there's not enough time for choons! It seems as though I've replaced browsing through drivel on FB to actually posting on WATMM, lesser of two evils I suppose. This was one of the final nails in the coffin for me...

Yeah I also hate teh Face. But I can't delete my account yet... I have a lot of pages "liked" that I actually follow and many people I know and talk sometimes use it too... Fuck! That's why I only got Facebook Messenger in my phone and I "unfollow" "friends" who only post stupid shit.

I mean, HELP ME!

Not quite, but I'm purging a lot of people I "friended" years ago back in it's infancy - people from school who I actually don't talk to even casually. My facebook feed is nicely edited too. Trimming down my social media activity in general to more productive stuff online and IRL. WATMM's intimacy and community is a nice thing.

Also quite pitchfork after reading it daily for 8 years. Still won't get a smartphone. I like quiet time. People I know who constantly get on their phones and/or text mindlessly freak me out.

I still have no Facebook account. Most of my friends are on IRC ( :mu-ziq: ) The rest I can contact via Skype or Whatsapp or just call or text if needed.

i quit facebook a long time ago (around when it stopped being for only people in schools and included everyone) mainly because i had a lot of personal information that i wasn't willing (and didn't want) to become public. i hate that a lot of apps require you to have facebook to activate them, and that there are a lot of musicians and filmmakers i'd love to contact/follow/keep in touch with that are very active on facebook- but i consider that the quid pro quo mechanics if ignoring such a major internet social hub.

someone told me i should create a fake fb account, but i still consider it giving them something they want: users.

i had a good purge a few years ago. i apparently had 300+ friends, but when i really thought about it, i definitely didn't have 300 friends, so about half got the chop... same as you, people from school i don't/no longer have (or necessarily want) anything to do with, random friends of friends whom i met once and they added me for some reason, etc... i still apparently have 170 friends, and i could probably lose a few more.

the bane of my facebook existence are the people who i can't acceptably de-friend, such as annoying colleagues or distant family members. inevitably they're the ones who post the most mundane and annoying shit.

I thought I'd bite the bullet and deactivate the whole thing rather than trim my friend list with a chainsaw on a rope. I'd prefer to do anything else than give Facebook exactly what they want, a user who will tailor every minute detail of their Facebook profile to reflect their personality, 'cause they make money from ad revenue or spying... or something. :cisfor:

I didn't want to waste any more time on it either by streamlining it either... Feels good, I think my general intelligence has crept up ever so slightly after leaving. Nice to see a lot of y'all are on the same page to. I've been a proper lurker on here, especially Gen Ban, for the past 2 years and the community at large seem pretty OK. I'd rather waste time here than FB.

Deleted my account a couple of years ago. But I still lurk on my girlfriend's account. Her "friends" make me hate it even more than I used to, though. It's a hate I'm still mildly addicted to, I guess.

I would just delete and block all those fuckers that share quotes and pictures of cute animals and babies that weren't funny five years ago. Do these people not understand that you can change your settings to mean that not everyone gets to see whatever you've liked or commented on?

Facebook is a dirty rotten hole. It looks even dirtier than MySpace used to be. At least MySpace was brash and dumb because it was full of kids who didn't know any better. Facebook is shit because it's full of dumb old people. And the only thing more annoying than a dumb young person online is a dumb old person online.

I am conveniently neither young nor old and I'm sure you'll agree that I am not annoying but a voice for truth online.

Thank you.

I would delete it but it's handy for finding out what's going on in my city, music-wise. There are some decent promoters and venues on there that have gotten me gigs which probably wouldn't have happened otherwise. I wish I could just delete my personal profile and keep my music page.

I basically use mine as an online address book/ event diary. I only share pictures with the people in them and close friends. I made full use of the privacy settings and I'm comfortable with that.

I use it for music (have learned of great shows happening that I would've missed if not for FB) and to keep in contact with good friends from my hometown (since I recently moved to a new city).

I am also a little addicted to FB Scrabble!

Totally! Myspace was great (as was xanga and lj to a degree) because the page aesthetics alone were such an indicator. Lot messier but lot more personality. So many slick websites are very subtle in their advertising and spam, it's quite eerie how many people aren't aware of it.

Hah, same here. In fact I was so annoyed by my distant great aunt's perpetual posts, re-posts, and app shares I de-friended her. Then last year my mom was like "hey, I don't understand why she needs this, but could you add her as a friend, just to be nice, thanks." Apparently she said me and my brother put her in "facebook jail" to which my brother said "I have no idea what the hell facebook jail is, but sure ok." So I did too, then I quickly blocked all of her updates in my feed.

People can get hooked and take it all to personally, regardless of age/background.

I have 17 people on my facebook. Close family & a couple life-long friends. It's my only interaction with humans that I know in real life. They are all thousands of miles away. If I deleted my account I would never get updates on my Aunt's candycrush achievements.

... And yes, in reply to the OP I to am greatly bothered by the platitudinous 'inspiring' image macros that bog down my feed in the morning:

I'm not usually one to generalize but the main offenders where the posting of this material is concerned are overwhelming insecure women.

In all seriousness, it's useful for music-related contacts. Most of the local and DIY labels and musicians I follow use FB very effectively. One of the main reasons I keep an account.

I deleted my account about 6 months ago. Anyone that gives a shit about me, actually, will call me and make some effort to get together and talk.

Honestly I think facebook has been incredibly destructive to the traditional definition of friend and relationship. It's about time we go back to meeting our friends in person... exchanging ideas over a beer or a coffee instead of a "wall".

Also, this just crossed my mind now but Yek, what was your previous screenname? =/

I deactivated my FB account last week on New Year's eve, and haven't logged back in since. Out of 170 "friends", I've talked to maybe 10 at the most all last year anyway.

So that's one New Year's resolution I've followed thru on thus far.
