Intervals & modulation of chords is what interests me mostly. The arcane magic behind classical music.

 

Can you specify what you mean by both intervals and modulations of chords.

By modulations of chords do you just mean harmonic motion in general?

Or maybe he means voicings/inversions? Substitutions?

intervals = how do you find out which chords work from a theoretical approach.

modulation = what is the theory behind harmonic motion, the system that tells you what works and what doesn't.

I'm quite illiterate when it comes to that stuff. common sense I have.

actually I suspect it's becoming an artifact in the music I do in Renoise, because I have to enter stuff via keys, and they are in a white and black key configuration on the keyboard.. in Reason I would always do these really angular melodies that seem to come easier because all the semi tones are in an equal length distance. it would be interesting to know what I was doing.

"Make sure your kicks and snares are nice and punchy." I didn't really pay much attention to drums when I first started listening to music, so when I first started recording I hardly noticed the drum levels and they often got buried. I didn't know what good drums were supposed to sound like because I never focused on them when listening to music Now it's something that often makes or breaks good recordings for me. Getting the perfect drum balance is still the trickiest part for me when it comes to recording bands. It's easy for electronic music though.

I wish someone had told me to listen to Sonic Youth and MBV when I was in highschool. They would have inadvertently told me something about making music that would have lead me down more interesting paths early on.

I'm using my A5000 as an FX unit mostly, sounds good for that. Good reverbs and tons of delays with live control parameters. Got it for 100eu complete with the box that still had the 3000eu pricetag on it.
