Do you think they're purposely trying to make youtube worse?

So obviously it's only streaming stuff in 1080 that was uploaded in 1080p originally right? Or is it upscaling lower quality material into 1080p?

Ye you can't upscale video, Im pretty sure. Im ok with less than that, as long as it works.

You definitely can upscale video....

How much content on the youtub is actually 1080p?

keiser report.

this video (go to youtube to see in 1080, the embed doesn't seem to and fast forward to 0:54 for the non archival)

sometimes i don't know whether you want to know something or you're just asking so you can take the piss in a reply. heh.

There's even 3D 1080 on the you tub. Although since 3D isn't the novelty it once was you don't see it as often any more.

not taking the piss.

Just curious - actually I rarely watch anything full length on youtub - so probably not worth it for me. Interesting bit of information though.

Seems like some mad update state of it.

Everything is fucking broken, fuck this.

Yes, it is. It really is. And so is Android. And gmail. And gmaps.

Google is steadily turning all its products and services into retarded shit. Makes me angry and sad, especially for android, which I have embraced at some point as my mobile platform of choice. I'm not sure what exactly is going on, maybe they're intentionally disappointing users, so they can (soon?) introduce non-shit versions of their products, but not for free. It would work.

Or maybe they just lost one gifted individual that designed UX for them. Or maybe an entire team. Most of fails I see are somehow based around idiotic user experience decisions. I don't know, it's just really fucked up, it's like somebody took over at google ux and he's a total rookie and has no idea what's good practice, but somehow manages to make everybody at google believe he's innovative and real cool. I see that kind of people in the industry, there's more of them every day.

Idiocracy.

firefox is developing a mobile os. And apparently the blackberry os is a faster more efficient design, shame that can't just be bought and installed on whatever device.

I wish they would stop cramming Google+ down your throat, I have never joined it, never will now fuck off!

Turns out you can't reply to comments on the 'Toob that are older than one month. Yeah that move to link your account to Google+ was a shitty one. But you still have the option not to do so.

yeah, if they'd kept g+ as it was it would have organically grown as the better social networking tool. But then like you said, they got too overt in trying to force people into that platform, which of course has the opposite effect (although i bet the number of accounts has increased along with the hatred).

Big company syndrome. It's about now given the format of the past 40 years of silicon valley that the top googlers should be moving on and founding their own rival efforts.

I believe adblock will block YouTube comments.

I have ABP installed, and while it does a great job of blocking ads in the actual videos (meaning playlists actually work), I must be missing the setting for disabling comments. Any hints?

I've only read about this online, here - https://adblockplus.org/blog/pure-youtube-video-experience

but when I try to go to http://youtube.adblockplus.me I can't. Maybe it's my weird hotel internet.

well i just tried it and it works with facebook. you have to install adblock first and then go to that youtube.adblockplus.me to kind of load the filters specifically for youtube...

btw thanks for this, quite handy!

Haha, the 'block all annoyances' option is a proper brutal cull. I'd prefer it if the options were presented as a checklist rather than a few broad groups of blocked content - personally I'd ideally like to be able to block everything except the suggested videos and the sharing tab because I find both useful. There's no way of getting rid of the other annoying stuff without blocking these too which is frustrating

One thing to their benefit is the 'what to watch' feature, which doesn't show any unrelated crap, it shows a lot of stuff related to my viewing history and so I've watched a lot of those. It could be better, but it's not bad.

The real name and g+ thing is shit, and I just hope they don't one they force everyone to use their real name. I like that the 500 char limit on comments is gone though.

I was there in 2006 when the vlogger thing started to become popular, and I do miss that aspect. There are still vloggers, but they are completely in the underground and it's impossible to grow your audience on youtube alone without something popular to talk about or promote. Also I don't like the word vlogger but fuck it I can't come up with anything else.

Lastly about the social media stuff. I think there is a vibrant aspect of the internet outside of social media, and I hope it stays that way. I think as long as the young people growing up now can remain technical and not brainwashed sheep, we'll be OK, and we can keep our anonymity at least from the public. Though, I have to say I'm starting to not want to give a single fuck about anonymity. I'm not going to moderate my feelings, my posts or where I browse, fuck that. It is my freedom as long as I don't hurt anyone. Self censoring can be kind of self fulfilling prophecy, and I'm doing my best not to do that.

I also think in a world where more people can see what you really feel and think, you will find out who are your friends quicker, and you'll also create a kind of evolution of society where ideas can be more easily accepted, or not be as controversial, and I mean, it can ultimately mean people can feel more free to be themselves. I'm not sure if that's compatible with human nature, and all the other problems that can arise, but it's just a thought

give it a try, after you install it you can customize it...

You would need to write your own list of filters for YouTube rather than add either of the four options they've provided for you. I'm too lazy to bother

When the fuck was the comment system ever any good on youtub? All that comment system has ever been since its inception is spam, racist shite and ignorance. They should follow dispy's advice: let the comment section burn in eternal damnation and keep the videos.

Comment sections are like that everywhere, but in the right niche they were gold because of the "like" system, some of the back and forth on bizarre or silly videos or YTP or weird channels, and other WATMM-esque corners of YT were hilarious. That's what I miss.

Social Networks pretty much fucked up the internet. I like to interact with other people on the Internet, but it all gets messy when your real life gets tangled up in the wired (safe for a few people). The great, big fun about the internet is that it's anonymous. Plastering your name and face to it forces you to act socially desirable, and puts a filter on the one thing that the internet was a playground for; unfiltered opinion.

I hope social networks die a slow, painful death. I think we're already seeing that, though. I'd say that in 5 years social networks will not be as prominent as they are today. On to a cyberpunk future!

Also, what didn't help either was the great influx of unconventional internet people; I'm going to quote Shadowwolf's e-zine now, because he describes the matter amply.

by a mystique of hacker romanticism and being a cyberpunk pioneer. It

even more hardcore...you were probably the only person in your whole town or

area logged into cyberspace!

The internet has changed, simply because the internet is made up of a different crowd than it was back in the day. In true nostalgia fashion I am going to say that the glorious early days (which I wasn't even part of) are gone. Now we have marginalized views, which used to be reserved for the crowd that didn't surf Internet, and which they force yet upon us.

I do foresee a great upheaval in the coming years, where the youth which has grown up using the internet reclaims their throne. Or maybe it's going to be other way around, where we will experience a great social revolution as a response to the social upheaval on the internet?

Meh, I'm talking out of my appendix. Gotta scoot now.

good post - it's weird for me to think about using the internet from 1996 or so until I went to college, the days of AOL chatrooms or waiting for kilbobytes of images to load seem like ages ago, not years

Oh that reminds me, i still haven't watched awe's interview. /goes to relevant thread to find where it was posted.

Also there was a narrative. It just wasn't narrated. ;-p
