Putin has said that he has gay friends, he is not against them competing, don't believe the imperial media outlets hatchet job on russia. Sure they're 15-20 years behind us in their widespread social acceptance of gays, but all that means is we should remember that we weren't very nice over here to gays either not so long ago, it takes a while for attitudes to shift yaknow. Our citizenry can't be left with any positive impressions of the place.
