Nothing Is Real

Recommended Posts

A lot of it is from archive.org. Also a lot is from an old porn torrent site that is no longer up called empornium.us. I really like to pull source video from people's old 8mm and 16mm home movies and from really old porn movies. I've got reams of stuff on a harddrive that I haven't made my through watching yet.

Home videos are great because the quality is shit. Lots of jumping frames, burned film, shaky camera work. It's cool to watch those movies and get a look into people's lives during a different time. They only shot happy moments, typically. So it's kind of cool to look at them and wonder what kind of struggles and stresses they experienced off camera.

The old porn movies really are wild. From an arousal standpoint, they're terrible. But they have really weird plots, strange characters, out of place scenic shots and other unusual elements that would probably be deemed unnecessary or extraneous by modern pornographers. I envision today's porn producers looking at one of those old films and saying, "more ass to mouth and less shots of seagulls in the harbor please." but it's those weird seagulls in the harbor moments that are really great. Old 60's and 70's pornos from France and Italy are especially great. They really tried to get artistic. They failed in most cases, but the shots in isolation are pretty interesting.

This one is for a track from the Deep Sea Creatures that Fred McGriff put out a few years back:

Really? Time to leech as much french stuff as I can. I should also mention that the old European porn movies have pretty great soundtracks for sampling too!

Yeah, some of those 70's films had amazing soundtracks. Someone should really go on an adventure to archive properly what was created then, kind of like how people went south in the 60's to document the myriad forgotten blues artists. It should be an organised battle to get it before it disappears forever.

Ha, yeah totally. Except I would guess that a lot of the masters from those small shady compainies are gone forever. I bet lossy divx copies are the last surviving vestige for a lot of that stuff.

i'll have to PM you at some point so that you may point out the finer points. heh [-;

In the interests of archiving for the future of course.

Great work! One of my favourites from the album.

Same here. Awesome job LOL. I watched this sitting in the dark and I had an eerie feeling watching this... As if the people in the vid were behind me.

Thanks man!

For all my talk of sourcing the video, I didn't mention that I shot the footage of the abandoned gas station myself. I saw it somewhere in rural Georgia while driving to Disney World. Tomorrow's Harvest had just been released and the notion of the impermanence of things was heavy on my mind at the time. I took it home and found the footage of a gas station being built and it seemed to fit the song so perfectly.

Wow - it really looks like vintage footage!

that's what I got out of it as well. images of the building process before Freeway systems became the commuting norm... many years later the old gas station in the middle of nowhere became a ghost station of sorts.

I was going to ask about that footage, seemed random for someone to film an abandoned place decades ago, you incorporated it really well.

This is one of my favorite BoC fan videos now. I really like the pacing and editing, I liked that it had longer uninterrupted shots.

My favorite parts were of the laborers and the gas station attendant at work. They weren't aware of being filmed, because you could see them puttering around and doing things in a less self-conscious manner. There's something really neat about the part where the car owner drives up and sees the camera, smiling and finding it amusing.

I like old films partly because we take video and pictures for granted now, so it's lost a sense of magic I guess. Because it's digital pictures are often staged or excessive and redundant and with the ability to delete it so easily fewer shots are random and truly "snapshots." Some of my favorite photos in my parent's old collections are ones taken without much thought and they're often the most intriguing and artistic, even if unintentionally.

Also, liked the random bear and the quick home movie shots of the man in the tunnel entrance, woman and her child, and the redhead lady.
