What is your conclusion? There is nothing that can be done?

I'm just curious what you would propose should be done in situations like these (like the James Holmes example you mentioned). Do you have a better proposition to the re-institutionalisation? Or are these the things that make life and we should just accept them as they are? Is that your argument? We don't need to govern these issues because they can be considered a fact of life?

I hope you understand I don't think there's an actual argument in making a list of examples of isolated killers who would have fallen through the cracks because no-one was even there to recognise the potential danger. There's also a list of people which were rightfully recognised as potential threats (like James Holmes), right? At least have something in place to deal with those recognised threats. In the name of optimising prevention and all that

when you ask me what 'we' can do, i mean all i can really say is that i didn't know that guy so i wasn't really in a position to do anything. 'we' as in 'society we' isn't really a borg-like organism with a hive mind where we can all see and shine a spotlight on problematic people. and even if we could somehow make sure every person got treatment, the treatment that we as humans have developed for this stuff is still largely ineffective. i know i've seen at least one thread about medications for mental issues here and it seemed like most of the posts were saying this or that medication wasn't working, or talking about bad side effects. there's the possibility that medications are actually catalysts for these events creeping its head up. 'help' and 'treatment' at best may just mean making existence slightly less horrifying/excruciating for some of these people. but take away the medication and then what do we have left to do with them? lock them up forever?

life isn't fair, the universe is chaos, your grisly death could pounce on you at any random moment, people aren't equal in almost any meaning of the word, and that's how almost all life has been since life itself began. the whole process of evolution hinges on inequality. many species only exist at the predation of others. some kids are born with fucked up genetic diseases, others may be born with predispositions to kill. that's not at all equal. lets just replace rampage killing with murder in general so that you're asking me what 'we can do about murder' which has been around since forever. and i'm not at all saying nothing can be done, but the problem is always balancing the cost of freedom against the benefit. and this is all just imo and i know literally next to nothing.

So you're saying nothing can be done because there is no cure? But regardless of a cure, there is something what could have been done to save those lives he took, right?

And you ask "lock them up forever" as if it's the only alternative, but an unfortunate one at that? Is that what you propose?

Could be me, but I still can't tell what you propose. I can only see lots of text on why there is no solution.

The author clearly misunderstands the friendzone. Then again he probably had no idea that the term existed up until the moment that he had the book by Sara Eckel in his hands which he used as the basis for his column, mostly unattributed.
