I was also curious and interested, even at it's rawest. That said DJ Rashad was notably an innovator. He also bridged the gap between the original scene and all of stuff influenced by it. Some might disagree but personally I think it's been one of the most invigorating and influential movements in electronic music recently and hasn't reached it's full potential. (if anything, it and dubstep help throw tempo and subgenre aesthetic constraints out the window).
