not wanting to go off on a tangent but what's the story with AB2,

it seems like quite a silent release compared to the others, not much ever said or referred to about it. i always thought it was almost like a bootleg or something with the poor label and the quality of it isnt that great either.

The Rabbit City Records release of Analogue Bubblebath 2 was a semi-official test pressing (this was around the time Richard was getting started with R&S), and Digeridoo plus two other untitled tracks were released as a white label release (not a test pressing) limited to around 1000 copies, and once R&S got the publishing rights for Digeridoo, that ended any association/license Rabbit City had.

I'm sure there is more to the story that's probably been lost to the mysts of time, but that's what I recall based on what I read/was told back then...

So really, the ABB series only has the following "official" releases (not counting reissues) (commercially):

ABB1

ABB3

ABB3.1

ABB4

It's funny... "Analogue Bubblebath" is such a early 90's techno/rave-sounding name - sort of like Radioactive Goldfish (ha, forgot about that release) back in those days...

Is the ABB5 up for negotiation?

Not sure what you mean... I'm not selling one! Rephlex has already said 'nay' to any more Kickstarters, etc.

If only we knew someone with special connections that might be able to make that happen...........

As I mentioned, I tried, but they're having none of it! Gotta respect their wishes, etc.

1. AB1 - Analogue Bubblebath

2. AB5 - A1

3. AB5 - B3

4. AB2 - Digeridoo

5. AB3 - .942937

6. AB3 - .215061

7. AB3 - .000890569

8. AB4- Cuckoo

I'm sure I've missed a few, but those are a few of the high points.

What? Nothing but Digeridoo from ABB2? Those two untitled tracks are some of my favourites!

If it's not about the money and he won't sell us one anyway, maybe he wouldn't mind just sending a digital copy to people who supported the Kickstarter.

there are 3 different configurations of AB3 : vinyle from 1993 [.0180871 which is two songs running simultaneously, each panned to the left and right channels] - cd from 1997 [.0180871R & .0180871L] - vinyle from 2002...

You're missing the point - he's the artist and this is his creative work - if he doesn't want it released for whatever reason, that's his prerogative - and as fans we need to begrudgingly respect that.

But what's maddening is if he doesn't want it released why distribute the promo copies or auction one off on ebay recently. It's been released, but only to a very select random few. The majority of the fans have been shut out by this odd distribution strategy.

I wanted to know if we could negotiate on the price of AB5 on Discogs but since Richard won't agree to more kickstarters it doesn't matter, unfortunately

Exactly - the guy asking 12K for ABB5 is taking the piss, for sure - plus, Rephlex isn't going to authorise any more CWLP-style one-time permission to distribute deals, so anyone wanting to "liberate the music for the masses" will be sorely disappointed!

Joyrex, none of the arguments for not releasing AB5 for sale make any sense:

1) Doesn't want it released to public - too late already has been, by his choice. There should no concern on how these tunes will be received. People who like them will buy them, others won't. At this point what does it matter.

2) Already pretty good quality rips available - we know and we are still willing to pay to avoid torrent/youtube rip hell and give our favorite artist some money for his creation, just like people still buy the latest Katy Gagy Cyrus stuff they can hear for free on Youtube, the radio or illegally download.

3) Not about the money - fine then just release them gratis, we won't complain

4) Kickstarter idea played out - sell it on Rephlex (R.I.P.), Bandcamp, CD, F^%$king Itunes. Doesn't matter the forum.

5) That one dude who paid $10k+ got a copy, so can you - Aphex...............pleaze

.

I appreciate that new tunes might be coming or new old tunes, but these seem like low hanging fruit. Put out some digital files, make the fans who overwhelming supported CAT023 and "touched" you with their support happy. Do what makes sense and release these in some form so that more than 21 of us can legitimately own these.

calm down men^ if the artist doesn't want 2 release it you should respect it, its his music

  1. No it wasn't - the ABB5 is a test pressing, was never officially released, etc. - the fact it became public knowledge doesn't qualify as a release.
  2. I believe the logic behind this is if they were to do a Kickstarter for it or MFM they would be exactly like the CW rip - from a vinyl, aka a semi-legit bootleg, and not from studio recordings, etc. If you consider that, then the rips that exist are probably just as good as anything produced via a new digital rip.
  3. They cannot be released for free - fees still need to be paid to the rights publisher (Chrysalis), etc.
  4. Not as simple as one would think, sadly!
  5. Richard's not asking anyone to buy copies for any amount of money - in fact, it's safe to assume he'd rather NO copies be sold, so no potentially higher quality rips get out into the wild. He's protective of his art, and rightfully so.
  6. He already made the fans happy by agreeing to release the CWLP as a semi-legit bootleg.

He could release everything ever done ever in 24/96 uncompressed hosted for free and you'd probably have someone complaining that he should have released stems of the tracks or have live streamed a tutorial on production techniques and how ripped off they feel about it.

It was given away with the black batch of the analord binders. i'd put that down as an official release.

but seriously, why are people harping on these two releases so much? we already have copies of the music. sure, better quality would be appreciated, but it's not as if the tracks are locked away in some vault never to be heard. also, i've got the distinct feeling that they wouldn't allow these to be kickstarted because there are already plans to release them officially at some point. remember, richard specifically mentioned mfm as one of the 6 albums he had ready for release in an interview a few years back.

Here's where I have to respectfully disagree. I count the test pressings sent out with the Analords and the one auctioned off immediately after CAT023 as "official" releases as none of them could have been distributed to the public without Richard/Rephlex's consent. The one sold on e-bay is especially odd, if you don't want any more/better rips to get out, why release yet another copy to the public ? They are very limited (20 or so copies ?), but still releases. Nothing left to do about its seems now other than wait to see what emerges from the Aphex Archives....soon(?)

He confirms that he was the artist behind the much-rumored-about Melodies From Mars album, which was made circa 1995 and has been circulating online for years: “There's a really bad copy of it on the net. I think I gave the tape to Warp, so one of those fuckers leaked it years ago. I actually went back and re-edited it, because I almost released it again, but then I got distracted again. Each time I go back to it, I realize there were loads more tracks. So it started off like a double album, but I think it's about four albums' worth. So it's really hard to pull together. I just need Warp or someone to come around and say, ‘Come on, let's fucking get these things out.’ But they don't, so it's just up to me. And nobody else hassles me.

Consider yourself hassled.

The ABB5s that were sent out with the Analords were gifts to say sorry for messing up a few folks Analord orders - again, not an official release. The one sold on Ebay was sold to a known collector who assured us they wouldn't be ripping it.
