Well, you need extra data for the additional channels. So far I haven't seen a streamable format that is capable of multichannel output (or even a widely used mainstream audio format). For that reason I abandoned my 5.1 projects until there is something that supports it other than DVD.

How about computers? If you have a nice soundcard and a 5.1 system, you're probably able to play 5.1 flacs and stuff like that.

Wait, flacs support 5.1? Can they be uploaded to bandcamp and keep the 5.1 information? If so, that changes everything..

FLAC supports up to 8 channels so even 7.1 should be possible in theory. Whether Bandcamp uses the exact files you upload I don't know.

Yeah. I really don't even know the second thing about mixing in surround sound. I've been wondering if it'll become the norm in about 10-20 years though.

Stereo is 2 channels. Surround is 5 or 6.

That's real nice, kept thinking it'd break into Explosions In The Sky style guitar explosion

Yeah. He's not a big fan of Aphex Twin. He only really likes Drukqs for some reason. I also showed him some of The Tuss and he suggested that they make a documentary on how Aphex Twin makes a track after he heard Death Fuck. I thought that was funny.

everyone remember the time

when the future was the promise of all great albums

being mixed in 5.1

and everyone would have a surround system

and listen to music that way

well that didn't happen

I feel bad for your time Limpyloo. Everything was made out of chrome.... and you guys had to use expensive analog equipment! That must have sucked.

I'm just saying that there are always these cultural forks-in-the-road

And it's just funny to see what comes to pass and what doesn't

I think in 5 years we'll be looking back at Google Glass

and laughing at pictures of people wearing it (probably in a buzzfeed listicle)

But actually the other day I was walking down the street and there was this band playing in the park nearby

and the sound was bouncing off the buildings in a very strange and amazing way

with really complex spacial filtery dopplery weirdness

when I got to the park I was dissapointed that the band didn't actually sound like

but I thought "I wonder if you could mix an album that way"

and then I was like "oh of course, but it'd require surround"

and then I got bummed out that surround wasn't more accesible

and I thought about when surround was the format of the future

and how that never came to pass

Alright, now you're making me feel bad! There's no reason to get your hopes down! In about 20 years our places of living will all be wired by computers running through everything, and I bet then we'll have smart surround sound which follows you around your house while you're doing stuff. Just wait and see.

Well part of my point is that everytime we forecast a hi-tech future, we're (mostly) wrong.

Although we can more-or-less gauge how technology will be in the future, we vastly overestimate how that technology will impact the average person. For instance: We will undoubtedly have amazing nanotechnology, but I don't think it will be installed in every wall of every house.

And I think the reason is, technological progress is generally a simple, linear process (i.e. things get better and smaller). Whereas cultural and political and socioeconomic factors are more complex and dynamic and chaotic. But simply put, just imagine a landlord in 20 years faced with the option of installing nanotechnology in the walls. Most likely this just won't happen. I think generally what happens is that the technological upgrades that directly address basic human needs get integrated.

I think that many predictions will be right, but the time scale is usually way too soon. You're right that you have to think in terms of practicality. But I do think that there will eventually be computers everywhere, probably wireless, and not necessarily " in the walls" though it may start out that way. For example I think eventually humans WILL experience actual VR and have cyberpunk-esque enhancements, but given how much we actually know about the brain at this point, it won't be for a long time. Much past our lifetimes probably. Not sure why Back to the Future was talking about.. what.. 2012 or Bladerunner highlighted the closing of this decade to having androids. Nooooo...
