Not a bad album, but not my favorite either.

I miss the smeary reverberated textures.

Didn't know about her until this thread popped up and I checked a few things out. Must say that I'm pretty impressed. New album is up for streaming here:

i'm curious about the "Recorded pretty simply, with a portable 4-track, Sony stereo mic and an upright piano" part.

it specifies the album was recorded in 2011. this track Cassiopeia appeared in compilation album for japan in 2011. perhaps an indication of things to expect??

yess. digging into groupers catalogue and getting obsessive is a great little world to absorb yourself into / big fan.

for some reason, the casual nature of the album gave me this bias that it wasn't going to be that good before I even heard the thing...

received in mail recently and been listening a lot. .. it's so beautiful ... *u*

the songs really are just classic grouper but played straight up on a piano + multitracking. the multitracked vocals are so pretty too, btw...

songs like clearing and lighthouse seem like similar songs melodically to alien observer, hold the way. but stripped back and limited to piano (more so than what I was expecting from a grouper piano album).

anyway. yes. lovely album :)

Just heard this album for the first time, I've never listened to Grouper before. I'm totally stunned at how incredible this is. I'm not really going to say anymore than that really. Pretty much lost for words to explain what a powerful effect this has just had on me.

Just got back from Grouper in London last night. Excellent stuff. She was on guitar for this one, played about 5 completely new songs off the bat (that are reminiscent of the AIA stuff) one of which was an absolute stunner. She played a few tunes of 'Ruins' as well, (Labyrinth, Lighthouse and Clearing) but as a guitar arrangement. Then finished with a nice long drone.
