Holy shit...what a night! I was the third person in line, and talking a lot to the first two guys in line. Dude number one in line flew out from Denver just for the listening party!! It was a great time hanging out and making new friends with huge aphex fans.

Also, the venue was awesome! Sound was incredible if you were standing right in the middle of the dancefloor. Very crisp and detailed. Also, the venue let the few of us that were lingering after everybody left stay for the next listening....so a few of us got to hear the album twice! And as for the album itself....

It was gorgeous, plain and simple. The album had a super nice flow. Not at all disjointed. His style has refined and gotten even better. He knows EXACTLY what he's doing. I call it punchy, funky aphex. Most of the tracks had a funky feel to them. It sounded like The Tuss evolved, which is exactly as awesome as it sounds. The production was perfect. And his songwriting has NEVER BEEN BETTER. Seriously, it was eerie how beautiful all of the tracks were. Many people in the audience stared at each other in disbelief throughout many points of the album.

I would say that this is the most impressed I've ever been on first listen of an album of his. I liked it better than the first few times I heard Drukqs or any other of his album. I don't want to comment on how it ranks overall as I have to hear it dozens of more times, but seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up being my favorite RDJ album. He chose really really good tracks for this one. Ladies and gentleman, he is back!

6 of the tracks have been available from live shows, and the other 6 I had never heard before.

If I didn't write anything, it's because I don't quite remember what they sounded like....not to say they were bad. I'd venture to say the album just got better and better as it went on.

Track 1: Manchester

Track 2: Metz

Track 3: Sorta hip hoppy rhythm, very nice track

Track 4: Minehead (super awesome funky track!)

Track 5: Vibervibed Synth Test

Track 6: Short nice interlude

Track 7:

Track 8:

Track 9:

Track 10: Singapore (awesome!)

Track 11:

Track 12: Barbican (beautiful, you've all heard it)

seeing it like this made me have the most pathetic thought "great, we only get 4 news songs" lol

5 if you count the japan bonus track

6 with the Japan track

Anyway, so I just gave the Minehead track a proper listen for the first time ever.

I think I'm going to cane this album like I haven't done with any album in years. Ulillillia style.

I never said there were only 4 unheard tracks.

There are 5 full unheard tracks, and 1 unheard 5 second interlude, so 6 total tracks.

If I left something blank, it's only because I forget what the song sounded like.

Plus, anybody that's disappointed about that....really needs to reevaluate stuff. Hearing a song in its full quality is NOTHING like hearing a shitty live recording. They all felt like new tracks to me as I'd never heard them in that quality before.

Trust me, you guys will love the album. Anybody that doesn't has bad taste in music, plain and simple.

I for one understood you perfectly there, your descriptions say it all. As for people disappointed in the fact that half of these have been heard before, don't really understand that either. I'm SO FUCKING STOKED to finally be able to hear these tracks proper. It's not like this is the last and final thing to be released by him either. Definitely sounds like he's got some more tracks in the cannon ready to go :aphexsign:

Nice review.... From our most fickle artist we get the ultimate album for fans ..... and its just the beginning ...and sounds like a "best-of-2007-2010" sorta thing before he unleashes the latest shit.

Excellent. Re-iterating my comments from the London thread, I'm pleased to hear it's going down well among the fans. Couple this with the press (p)reviews and I believe it's going to be a classic Aphex LP that we're all going to be enjoying for years to come.

that's my homie Eric! i love that dude.

he has a youtube channel where he reviews retro games!

Are we sure 4,7,8,9 or 11 aren't buried in a 200X live set somewhere? Assuming they're all from the same period? It'd be very cool if one of them HASN'T been spotted yet in one of his DJ sets as his....to keep us on our toes sorta thing..

That's actually a really good point. Interesting if they are, as fans have done such a good job of picking out the unreleased tracks as Aphex material long before Syro was in the collective consciousness... would be funny to imagine if we've been unknowingly sat on the whole album (or the majority of it) for years.

as a secret chiefs 3 fan who watches a lot of live youtubes of them...i was slightly disappointed with new album INITIALLY due to the 'damn iv heard this one' factor.

all i have to say to those who like watching guys jerking and twiddling knobs.SUCK EGGS...but it will pass....eventually.

I'd venture to say that only the super aphex nerds know about these songs from youtube. This is going to be a whole new album to 99% of people, me included (I honestly don't count hearing them before...it's nothing like hearing it on an album with full quality!).

We should be thankful Richard does things this way I think. I believe that is how Richard tests songs out to see how much people like them. It's the best quality control...let it sit on the shelf for nearly a decade...play it out a few times, see the reaction, and just wait. In the end, good tracks age like fine wine, and if you're patient, you end up with a choice of tons of tracks and can create an amazing album with no dull moments. It's the ultimate strategy really. Of course, it keeps your fans waiting over a decade...which would destroy the reputation of any other artist, except for one as world renowned as Aphex.

It's actually a perfect storm.

Yo! Yes, Eric was the shit!! And we talked about that....I actually found his videos yesterday! Coincidentally enough, we both attend magfest, which is crazy! I was too drunk to properly tell him my involvement as well with the video game scene....very awesome dude indeed! I hope I get to hang with that guy again sometime. Nerding out with him about Aphex (and just hanging out in general) was really fun!

i have a feeling that the (perceived) backlash over old songs being on Folio A has taken some of the wind out of the sails for Folio B's release. Hope I'm wrong, though. Not like SC3 ever sticks to a release schedule. Still want a Vehm'd out Brazen Serpent official release, that's like the SC3 equivalent of hearing a studio Metz Track for me, I guess. Maybe it only "works" live though, I dunno.

Trey, pls.

Glad I haven't caned the Aphex live tracks too much, in any case.

I just got back and have to agree with much of what Mike_Haggar said. I won't get too specific as many have done so already... this is the best reaction I've had to hearing an aphex album for the first time. it all sounds very post Tuss/Windowlicker (btw I don't know these new tracks from youtube plays / live shows, so it was all new to me save the first track).

LOVED all the tracks except one... track 11, or the "jungle" track. kinda meh. that said, the album is pure mutant funk brilliance. flowed beautifully. unmistakably RDJ. when the last track came on (the piano track) the whole place fell totally silent. i was with press peeps so they were talking during much of the album, but everyone shut up when that track came on. it didn't feel like a tacked-on piano piece either; it ended the album just right.

anyway, Syro is a beast. cannot wait to own these tunes and blast them in the car...

What's that jungle track like? Mangle-style, or? Aphex is pretty amazon at jungle.

It's nowhere near as wild as the Mangle track. I think "jungle" is just being used to describe it in a ballpark sense. It's not really typical jungle. It uses some jungle breaks and samples, but he slows it down a bit and makes it his own. No Amen breaks. I personally think that track may be my fave. That one, the last track and 180db.

That was the track with the sick, bendy, acidy bass that did some formant stuff at the beginning, right? Like you say, it was kind of calm and holding back a little.

Hey Pabs! I didn't even try! :)

And yeah... most are gone... SPD occasionaly pops in... I hang out more in Chatmm rather than post in threads.
