Toronto listening party - Syro Review

Recommended Posts

Guest Papillon

Hi there

I want to warn you I didn't like the album so a harsh review will follow.

Do you like flim, pancake lizard, the last few minutes of Mike flowers pops remix, or the last minute of the journey remix? How about Drukqs, or Analord, SAW II or Polygon Window??

Well if so you may not like Syro.

Track 1-3 are post human out of this world good, I feel so grateful for having the opportunity to hear those tracks on a nice system in a club, that was a totally unforgettable experience. The second half of the metz track is sublime, it's for me the best Aphex of all time. Those first three tracks are saturated and dripping with Aphex acid/goodness like no other tracks in the past.

After track three the album went in a direction I wasn't expecting.... More like the "men" single and nothing at all like Tuss or Analord or Drukqs.

Tracks 4 - the second last are butt raping German Nazi/Russian mega rave puke your guts out ala mixing vodka and scotch together awful IMO.

I'm so gutted now.

I feel like this is RDJ's way of saying fuck the world - move on people - electronic music is totally gone.

If any of you thought Tomorrow's Harvest was a let down (I loved it) because it lost some of BOCs charm you're probably going to hate this.

I totally don't get the comments about this being a logical step forward from Tuss or Drukqs... This is exactly what I expected when I first heard about the rumors of a collaboration with die anterword and nothing like Tuss or Analord...

A few years ago I woke up in the middle of the night with the worst pain I've ever felt in my life, it was like I was dying in my bed, my girlfriend called an ambulance it turns out I had a huge kidney stone that was trying to move through my ureter.

When I got to the hospital it was too late to get a general anesthetic so they had to keep my awake and just use a local anesthetic.

Anyway to get a 10mm stone out of your ureter they insert a tiny claw/camera on the end of a metal tube into your penis and move it up through your body. It's horrible and just feels so wrong, every bit of strength I had left in my body I used to fight this thing....in the camera I could see and hear drops of piss and blood dripping out of my penis on to the floor...

Anyway the second half of Syro is like that.

The Quitus review was too complimentary.

I'm sorry guys ban me if you are pissed but this is my honest opinion from a die hard fan.

The silver lining is that I got to hear that iron sky song played before minipops on bbc..I hadn't heard that before. That track is good.

Oh yeah there were photocopies of the aphex logo etc. at the club, but noone seemed interested, when the album ended pretty much everyone bailed fast and furious.

Yikes

Well the Metz track and the third track are so incredible though and worth the purchase.

A review? You said it was bad with some gibberish thrown in.

Sorry should have said tracks 4-10 were outtakes (tracks not good enough) to make the men single.

Is that better.

you are kind of the first one to put the album down so maybe you are just a grump

It's out in a few days judge for yourself. If you like terrible rave music you'll be happy.

No I didn't.

Look I'm sorry for pissing some of you off. Maybe it was a bad listening day or something. I might be losing my shit. But first impressions are very rarely wrong.

I'm personally really looking forward to the stone passing section of the album. If the second half of this album doesn't sound like a large stone passing through my penis I'm going to be very disappointed.

It was more like a claw grabbing on and tearing/dragging the stone out of my penis.

Burn the non-believer!

Meh, its just your opinion dude. But I seriously can't wait to hear pristine quality release of the album now.

No one likes every Aphex Twin Track ever released. No o.n.e.

And some tracks take a few listens to click and for some they will just never click.

And don't fret, I'm sure we will be getting another Aphex Album much sooner than this one and a lot more shocking. This was his play it safe album. People say 13 years for an Aphex twin album but its more like 7 when you consider The Tuss was made by him.

Yeah but that's what's so upsetting about this. The guy himself (RDJ) said this was his most accessible album to date,??? Maybe that guy who said I was a grump earlier was right, I feel like I'm living in twilight zone or something that record was so unlike Aphex to me that I would never have believed it had I not been told it was. I guess that is what the quietus interview mentioned about others like Wisp, or newer artist doing the Aphex sound as good as RDJ or better...Blargh... Aghhhh

Look I'm sorry I just re read my posting and it was pretty bad to say those things.

But I wanted to level with the forum and offset some of those ppl who just say it's a stellar release for the sake of saying something.

In hindsight I should've said nothing.

If a moderator reads this please delete the thread.

ha that interview (or was it a review where that was said?) is wack. nobody is doing his sound better than him.

i'm sorry but wisp, monolith, kendrick or any of that other stuff out there that was aping the tuss sound, actually matches it in quality. at least not from what i heard.

its nice stuff but it just doesnt have the juice. havent heard one single track that matches the precision of the drums on Rushup | Bank 12 or the insanity and density of death fuck or the consistently solid notes/melodies that are played across that release or any of his releases, or even just the mixing/sound quality on tuss.

(im talking about the obvious afex clone type musos on rephlex or elsewhere, not including things like squarepusher or others of that caliber in that statement)

I understand that. I totally agree with you. I wasn't ever a big fan of any of those artist you mentioned. And your comment about the quality difference is spot on.

Wait until you hear this one, before you guys execute me. Seriously it's nothing like Tuss or Drukqs.

I admit my post was stupidly harsh.

If I could undo it I would.

However the album was in my opinion very disappointing.

Sorry guys.

Well who knows maybe a few people will join you in your thoughts/feelings but since very few people have had the luxury or the curse of hearing it before release we'll just have to wait and see.

yeh youre entitled to your opinion. i just hope i dont end up agreeing with it

there are trax hes done that i dont care for

doesn't surprise me if true

few things more embarrassing than older guys trying to recapture the energy of youth and failing

that vibervibed synth test whatever sounds terrible

imo Aphex has always had a taste for crappy rave stuff when he djs, it just luckily hasn't crept into his albums so far

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

- lost cloud

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

You know now that I've had more time to think about it, I have a better idea of why I didn't like it so much... I think it's because there is like a missing part or something...like for the first time in Aphex music (that I'm aware of) the continuity is not there... His music IMO has always been good and each release seemed to be better than the one before more or less, that trend continues for part of Syro... And then it doesn't (suddenly). And for me it doesn't get better. So basically the first song is very nice, metz is a masterpiece, the third song is IMO the next level shit (honestly its so good I just wish it were longer.

And then the album just gets really fast and it's all about BPM, not as much melody. But maybe it was just the system or something I probably missed the fine details.

Jeez I should've slept on it before posting a review... That guy who said reviews after one listen are illegal was right.

I probably won't come on here after this post, this thread is getting me in to trouble.

Hope you guys wil like the LP though.
