I'm personally really looking forward to the stone passing section of the album. If the second half of this album doesn't sound like a large stone passing through my penis I'm going to be very disappointed.

yes via a copyright claim on youtube against jasondovervan's youtube account

that's a strange confidence you have there. seems like you're setting yourself up to fail

yeah a lot of people with Aphex (especially me) have a track record of not liking a track for a few listens then liking it later once it becomes familiar to them. If something is at a higher bpm, it takes a few listens sometimes to familiarize yourself with the elements of the track.

Are the higher bpm tracks like Death Fuck?

Not that I recall, more like just the rhythm section, deathfuck had a wicked melody too, someone else there described the music like Mt. St Michael, but I didn't get that either.... The tracks were (much) more pared down, at least that's how they sounded to me.

Maybe someone else who went to the listening event will have a different opinion.

It doesn't matter though the first three tracks were the best thing I've heard from Aphex ever. Jeez better forget my review. I was hoping for something completely different.

I was expecting and would have been delighted to hear more accessible tracks and by that I mean more like ICBYD or some of the slower BPM tracks. I have less interest innthe hyper speed dance tracks. But I admit I'm a bit out of the loop with current music.

Four or five more tracks like Metz would have been incredible, but maybe my expectations were too high.

Honestly I don't get wat he's going for. If those tracks were "banging" then I'll take tomorrow's harvest anyday of the week.

Look I'm sorry for pissing some of you off. Maybe it was a bad listening day or something. I might be losing my shit. But first impressions are very rarely wrong.

I don't really care about failing. This is an opinion based forum. I mentioned in my msg that I didn't like the album...and that a less than favourable review would follow. I gave everyone an opportunity to stop reading.

Maybe it's just like other said might be that I wasn't able to appreciate the later tracks because they were wicked fast and need time to sink in.

As I said I was expecting something completely different, and that's mostly why I reacted negatively.

Some people like RDJ's dance tracks, I like all of the other stuff. The slower more experimental tracks are what I like best about his music.

Well anyway the record is out in a few days, I'm sure you find something on there that you love. Fck better close this thread already.

Could be but this version sounds infinitely better, and more listenable, like more Analord sounding.

Track four at the event had no memorable components (for me), just irritating drums. I wonder if maybe it was due to excessive high volume?

Look it could be a fluke, but the people sitting around me were not moving or saying anything at all it was a very weird experience, not a great way to hear the new album in my opinion.

isn't that actually a good thing? but thanks for sharing your opinion with us.

i liked reading your comments papillon

no worries - appreciated the review.

I'm very excited to hear Metz - sounds like that will be the stand-out track for a lot of aphex fans.

Maybe they were being silent and sitting still because they were listening to the album?

it's kinda weird, that we don't have more listening-party-reviews. what's with all the london people?

How loud is the music at these listening parties? Because, as much as I enjoy live music being really loud, it's a shit way to hear music for the first time. At least when it comes to music like this.

Too bad you had that experience Papillon, maybe when you receive the album and listen at home with a pair of headphones it'll be really different. I'm also a bit weary of hearing this at a listening party (I'll just grab a few beers and hopefully be in a relaxed mood throughout). I think a huge plus is that my expectations aren't high, I'm not waiting for another Drukqs or anything + we already know 6 of the 12/13 tracks so...

Is this the first new Aphex Twin release you witnessed? Because I find that sometimes as soon as I start following an artist, the newest thing can really dissapoint.

I'd like to keep the thread as a bit of criticism isn't out of place, unless you really insist of course :)

I disgaree with the OP. It's funny, I am not so much of a fan of tracks 2-4 (Metz is a little too vvanky for my tastes), but track 5 onwards really grabbed me and never let go. I would say that this is probably his most dance-floor friendly album, so maybe if you were expecting somethin different it could disappoint, but I certainly wasn't.

Music is all about opinions ofc, OPs just happens to be incorrect (imo)

Those people have not been seen since.

Papillon, thank you for sharing your opinion. Don't feel bad.

I'm really glad to have read it, because I had very high hopes this record - but I'm not really a fan of the trashy/ravey/dancey (or whatever you want to call it) thing RDJ can go down. Druqks is my favourite album of his by far, and The Tuss is also wonderful. I won't go in negatively to listening now, but I at least am less likely to be disappointed.

I wish I had been a bit more prepared, for example, for some of the turns Squarepuner took with his albums! I should learn just to not have too big expectations. But hype and big expectations are fun, especially when they're met. :)

Yeah, I also appreciate your courage in stating the (so far) minority dissenting opinion about this record. Every other review I've seen has been so glowing, and it had me worried that my expectations will be set too high. To be perfectly honest, I want a difficult album from AFX (one of the reasons I love him so), or at least a set of difficult tracks balanced with "minipops" style tracks. Sounds like this will be up my alley, but it's good to be reminded that it won't be for everyone.

Guest Chesney

yeah, don't pussy out! stick to your opinion if you believe them.

It's great that opinions vary like this. The hype is so huge on places like this and people feel like they have to like certain tracks because they are made to feel second rate or retarded for not liking something. you cannot learn to like something much like you cannot force yourself to love someone or someone to love you. Things can grow on you for sure and tracks can take you by surprise after a break but if you hate something then you are never going to love it later. That would be rare even if it did happen.

You're wasting your time if you are listening to music that you think you should like because of your peers when you should be listening to music you really love.

I actually really like the rancid detuned riff on that Viberty thing but I can't say much for the drums and boring arrangement/structure but, it's live so a studio version is going to be worked. Right? *fingers crossed*

Nah man! Just your opinion is all. Everyone's super hyped about the album and you didn't like it as much as you thought. No biggie.

I for one like all of aphex' except for his really harsh industrial/metallic sounding tracks (which some people seem to love?) a-la ventolin, lots of analogue bubblebath etc.

Maybe over time some of the songs will grow on ya. LOL I used to skip past ziggomatic when I first bought drukqs. :cerious:
