So, ello.co may or may not become a thing. It's definitely popping right now; there's a lot of artists/musicians/writers/digital creators and such.

Basics: it's somewhere between Twitter and Facebook, with an emphasis on no advertisements, no data-mining. Here's a rundown: http://www.vox.com/2014/9/26/6844633/what-is-ello-should-i-care

If you just wanna see what it looks like, Machinedrum has an account at: ello.co/machinedrum

It's currently invite-only, and I snagged an invite and now have invites to give out. So if anyone here is interested, contact me via PM with the email you'd like the invite sent to. No, I won't touch your email otherwise, don't worry.

Okay, let's all rip apart why social media sucks now.

their 'manifesto' (if it could even be called that) seems really not believable to me. Also they already contradicted themselves twice during their mysterious publicity launch seizing on Facebook's name change policies. Once by saying they are 'ok' with NSFW content even though they said no porn allowed months ago and twice by saying that they are an 'independently' ran company when it recently found out they are currently operating on 400,000 seed money from a venture capital firm.

anything is better than facebook (seriously fuck Mark Zuckerberg, the twat) but Ello is not the answer, and anything that plays on people's freedom of speech morals to gain new users In my mind needs to be looked at very very closely. Often times this can be used as a ploy to trick more intellectual or socially conscious people.

edit: the invite only exclusivity bs also reminds me a lot of how a lot of us got sucked into Gmail in the first place, we wanted to feel 'in the club' before it was available to the general public. viral marketing tactics written all over it

Lol, this is basically tumblr2, i have seen tumblr accounts making their ello page look exactely the same...

As much as I wouldn't mind something that will kick facebook off its throne (I believe this is an inevitability) this won't be it. They somehow managed to do some marketing so that a lot of people seem to be talking about it. And they even did the "invite only" trick to make it all seem so exclusive and elite, like it's a big deal. But it isn't. It's going to fail.

what's sort of fascinating to me is that people who've idealized Ello as the 'next big thing' have rejected this premise, that the invite only thing was designed as a viral marketing tactic or a trick. Almost everybody i've brought this up to has almost an identical defense 'they didn't want to slam the servers on the launch' <-- seriously? Why is this the default understanding of something that has repeatedly been used a viral marketing tactic. bizarre as fuck

I find nearly any form of social media an interesting way of looking at how society behaves and operates with this relatively new form of communication, the internet. Newsgroups were interesting to me. Forums. Myspace. Facebook. Twitter. Google+. Orkut. Tumblr. Various formats of commenting systems on websites, blogs. All kinda of skew differently, given their (often changing) parameters.

As any other social platform, I find it to be just another tool to showcase my work. At Facebook I never chat or "like" stuff or upload shit, I only use it as a digital newspaper. Hopefully Ello would be the same, unless it starts with its "premium" features, then I'll close my account.

But I want less social media in my life not more! Seriously though I'm already on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, tumblr, soundcloud and YouTube - I've lost the ability to concentrate on anything longer than a short paragraph / 20 seconds of video. Fuck Ello, fuck all social media, fuck my life.

this a coo social network, classy, neat, clear, the invite only thing is smart so they contain real humans in there and avoid promo invaders and spam Viagra bots, they should keep it that way and never unleash the beast "too" public.

now the question is, do we need ello in our lives ? is this a valuable thing and compensate a lack of something we don't have on facebook and twitter ?

i wait and see, but as a musician, i deadly in need of a great social network that have this myspace style (from the great days)

the easy interaction, the whole page in one, no timelines,

this sort of page that you can manage and spend hours of making it pretty, with almost infinite possibilities and where you still can connect with other pages,

bandcamp miss the last option, you can't spend hours on bandcamp going through pages and pages,

i wish ello can change the game and slap facebook in their ass, but i remember google + and ....

ah fuck it man, I'll just go and try it out. it's sort of a twitter meets tumblr. might work, might fail...

I just really started to hate facebook over the past few years, and diaspora is just too cumbersome for most people to get into.
