I quite like the Jung test for the same reason some people like horoscopes, never says anything you don't want to hear. Whenever I do other more valid personality tests I just realize what an awful cunt I actually am.

Btw, I discovered this after reading a book bu C.G.Jung about psycological types. I have to say that reading that book was one of the biggest steps in trying to understand me more. I'd recommend anyone read it, but I reckon it's a little bit difficult and you have to go the same sentences over and over to fully get the meaning

It definitely has its flaws, but I get the same result every time I take it, so there must be some truth in there.

Likewise, I've been taking this every year or so for over a decade and I always get INTP. edit: unless I'm not sober. Then I'm all over the place.

@marked x 0ne -- re: "But I also find the test to be a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, as in, you're really just projecting an ego on to some labels rather than revealing some sort of inner workings" I gotta disagree. The first time I read my results I was actually laughing with joy about how well they had nailed my habits and general disposition. Since then I've grown as a person but the core attitudes the test describes remain intact regardless of the mind I pay them. I come back to thinking about it everyone once in a while, and notice that I still fit the bill. And likewise, others don't. It's not as if anyone could read the INTP section and say "that's me alright". They would need to be lying to themselves, which I am certain I am not (w/ respect to this test anyway).

To anyone interested in this test beyond a free online analysis, or in other people's behavior, I recommend the book "Please Understand Me" by David Keirsey. My girlfriend had me read it a while back, and has even highlighted sections of my personality to help my mom understand some of my behavior, as my girlfriend (after reading the book) has come to understand my utilitarian, scrutinizing attitude by way of these archetypes.

That said, perhaps this test doesn't apply equally well to everyone, hence the suspicion some people harbor toward it. But reading about "guardians" and "artisans" (in Keirsey's book) in particular has allowed me to better interact socially w/ personality types that seem unreasonable to me. It's a test with at least a little value, IMO.

I found the info on wiki about different types pretty interesting and for me pretty accurate. I don't really go by the self fulfilling prophecy with this although some people may vary in terms of the amount they are effected by certain aspects. IT'S SCIENCE. In fact I would go as far as challenging anyone who takes the test and says "that's nothing like me" and question if they answered the questions honestly. holy crap, i just checked another site on my type out and it pretty much nailed me.

Socionics (another Jung-based typology) is even worse than Myers-Briggs when it comes to self-fulfilling prophecies. It tries to give detailed predictions of intertype relations, and believing these predictions can make people behave differently from how they otherwise would.

will i ever meet another INFJ? :(

i think jung was full of shit and personality tests are the worst thing ever (i'm reminded of the quote about Adorno despairing about his secretary asking him if he was an introvert as if people were starting to take pop magazines into real life) but supposedly i'm an infj too. interestingly you're one of the watmm'ers i feel some affinity for.

I don't think Jung had anything to do with the creation of this test and his writings on personality types are pretty explicit about the mutability of the type in an individual (individuals can exibit traits from conflicting types, can change types, etc). I certainly never read about the test in any of his books.

It's not surprising to hear you call him full of shit whilst siding with Adorno though since he was a veritable taboo among the Frankfurt School (a "frothing fascist" as they called him). Even today he's completely dismissed. In a later work Ricouer once said that even though he sometimes finds Jung compelling one simply doesn't acknowledge that in Europe. And nearly ever zizek book has a minimum of one Jung put down lol.

I personally find some of jung's work pretty brilliant, especially his alchemical writings. I think they are of limited philosophical value and his work is politically naive and during the Second World War pretty offensive. But there's a certain beauty and originality present in his work, and as therapuetic devices some of his theories are pretty compelling. He also seems like an essential foil for Freud, almost like a necessary frame of reference for psychoanalyzing him.

But anyway: ALCO
