Really nice synth work in this one, very cool acid line, nice rhythmic chord changes. The cut/res is effective. I like this more than a lot of the Analord stuff I've heard. Nice call on the light pads creeping in. Interesting disonance when the acid line alters for the break. The kick pattern's very cool. The drum work progresses really nicely, subtle, keeps the track moving forward. The eerie organ stuff is that emerges is very cool. I really liked that. Kept my interest the whole way through.

Yep i'd have to say it's your best track... i can tell you put a lot of work into it. You grabbed the track by the tits and played it fat until it lactated. good work.

Safe. I took a lot of time on the mastering/post production side. Don't really know if it sounds any good, but sounds pretty clear and tight to me. I've still got a lot to learn on that side of things though...

Anyway, glad you liked it. Cheers for listening!

Thanks for listening lads! Glad you liked. Yeah, I WISH I could get the production as tight as Analord. Jesus, that would be amazing. Don't think I've quite got the mastering skills of Aphex yet though. Bummer.

pretty fkin good, i really digged this (heard it five times now)! but the mix is really unbalanced! way too loud hihats, cymbals and rims and the snares are FAR too thin and high (nothing wrong with such snares but i'd layer it with more punchy snares if i were you)

the low-end is all fuzzy and muffled and it nearly dissappears near the end of the track (hehe). the track is also a little cramped and narrow, try to widen it up a bit.. plus the acid-lines seriously lack beefiness, it almost drowns in the rest of the track..

and about that dissonant acid-line that kicks in around 2:40.. it's a nice progression from the previous line and it really flows nicely together with the melody that follows shortly after that.. BUT: it clashes with the backgroundstrings in a BAD way (dunno if that was intentional?). the melodies get very nice after that though, top quality stuff!

so yeah, musically it sometimes IS up there with the best of them but soundwise its not too spectacular.. if you tweak it some more, this could be a stunning track!

Right, how the FUCK do you master stuff properly then? I've got T-Racks 24, and it seems pretty good. I make a track in FLoops 6 - really fuck about with the compression and effects and that to get it all sounding nice and the sounds sounding seperated (I honestly spend a lot of time trying to get a good sound). Then, I like, play the track live (with all the acid build up's etc done manually as I'm recording) and real time record into Cool Edit Pro using the best quality I can. Then I take the wave file, and start trying to master it in T-Racks 24 - I used the "Gentle Mastering 1" preset for this track. I actually thought this one sounded really nice - the best I've managed so far. But obviously not.

HOW DO YOU DO IT???? What settings do you need? What about EQ on the snares? How much? I find that hi-hats either get totally lost in the mix or they sound maybe too loud - how do you sort that out? How do you get lots of bass type sounds, layer them on top of each other, and be able to hear them all with no distortion?

I can't seem to get it right.

HELP.

really really good track, best one i've heard from you so far!

but compared to analords it lacks like another dimension or two :)

as for the mixing - the whole rhythm track is quite poorly mixed. except maybe the clap. not exactly sure what you're doing wrong but the rhythm track stand out too much. the snare is too dry for my taste, hats too aggressive. the claps are lovely though...

did you run the hats+snare through a phaser or something? if so, try removing it!

No, the hat's and snares have a little compression, a little EQ, er, and that's it. Maybe they just need turning down a bit? Simple as. As for the thin sounding snare - I gave it some mid-range and hi-range EQ (and on the hi-hats, but different amounts) to make it stand out and not get lost in the mix. I think it worked (you can hear the snare nicely), but I should probably have boosted the low end as well to make it less thin sounding. Sounds logical do you think?

I didn't notice anything mixing-wise I would complain about. A lot of it seems a matter of taste. It sounded nice. And I dont think aphex is that great at mastering, he's way too focused on his music to give a shit. The production quality of aphex tracks vary so much. Ive always thought he was a bit weak in commercial mixing/mastering standards department.

i've been in the worst hotels in the world... yesterday 30 or 40 teenagers shouting, smashing doors in all the hotel, impossible to sleep without my earplugs (and they hurt). that said i had a double bed. today i'm in a dormitory, best - you usually meet people. there is a terrace with a great view, free coffee & water, and it's cheaper!

i'm back home in a few days... i have tons of guitar stuff to record (6 months without comp), and i'll have my speakers :)

Aaaah! Nice one Bubba - I thought it sounded OK too! I think it's just a matter of taste like you say. Sure the snares might sound thin, but that's because the snare sound I used was quite thin. But that's the sound I wanted to use! I may have made it worse by adding mid-range and hi-range EQ with no bottom end (sAfrican American), but hey, I like the way it sounds! Anyway, thanks for listening - cheers for the comments!

Ooooh, sounds a bit nasty - I used to live under someone who was really noisy all night and I used to wear earplugs - you're right, they do hurt quite a lot! I always used to worry that one might work it's way into my ear during the night and I'd never get it out......

Really very good, nothing wrong with the eqing mixing, sounds fine. This developes at a sumptious pace, quality acid lines and those silk synth lines are rather nice. Yeah tops.

nah, mine are made for my ears, they can't get in but they're not bland and hurt a lot if you press them (like when you put your head on the pillow). but this hotel i'm in now is great. i just had breakfast on the terrace, cereals and coffee, i'll buy some mangos for tomorrow's breakfast :)

edit: i love my slogans :)

how did you get the acid?

real tb-303?

He he he.....maybe....er, no. Not at all. I wish I had one though. The acid here was done with the fantastic AudioRealism Bassline Pro VSTi. The best acid you can get withough buying a TB-303. Bar none. Well, best VST acid anyway...
