Makes sense. Cassettes generally had a frequency response of 50hz to 16khz, so anything above that would just be noise. I'm assuming these are the older tracks that were mastered straight to consumer tape

Bit rate and sample rate aren’t the same thing. My understanding is that mp3 encoders running at a lower bit rate will lowpass audio prior to encoding to improve the quality of the encoding, but this doesn’t mean that all audio that has been lowpassed is “proof” of a particular bitrate. It’s a correlation-does-not-imply-causation kind of situation.

Please feel free to correct me, anyone, if you know different.

Given the average age of an aphex fan in 2015 I don't think anybody's going to miss those >16khz
