Did the "pay for the forum or get banned until you pay" remove some of your friends?

Also - if there's supposedly no porn, etc. there, then what was the fucking point of leaving WATMM and starting up that place? I thought the whole point was because WATMM is too "family friendly", etc.? Fucking children, the lot of you - "Don't tell me what to do - I won't follow the rules"...

The Something Awful forums has a one time $10 fee and charges more for stuff like avatars, search, archives and PMs. So it's not unheard of.

Yes, I know why it was started, etc. - my point was if freedom to do what you want is what you were after, it's sadly ironic you're not partaking in those acts that so many of you demanded the right to do here now that you have your freedom. Goes to show you that all the gnashing of teeth and moaning was for naught and some of you just needed time to grow up. I liken it to a dog who chases a car, and finally catches it - now what?

Now you really are trying to troll - there's been paid forums for ages - one notable example I can think of is Something Awful (surprised you or anyone else over there aren't familiar with it), and just at a glance, they've got 6100+ users logged in at the moment, out of almost 200K registered.

The whole reason I'm moving to a paid format is people obviously see value in what they get out of WATMM, and so for 3 bucks (or 1/100th of your jacket) a year, they can participate in the discussion and be part of the community. Since going to paid-only accounts over a year ago, bannings are down, troublemakers are almost non-existent, and folks are generally happy here, because we're finally back on track with why this place exists to begin with: the music, and things related to it. Memberships are up, and now instead of worrying about troublemakers, I can focus more on getting related content back onto the site, with the Downloads section finally returning soon and offering up a great archive of live shows, etc. and more to come in the new year.

I also don't think it's fair to folks who have contributed or have a paid account for those who have never contributed to continue to benefit from others' contributions, so probably early next year, everyone will be asked to upgrade their account voluntarily, and at a later point, all free accounts will be set so unless an annual subscription is purchased, they will no longer be able to post. Those who see value in the site will contribute, and those who don't will go somewhere else or just lurk.

Nobody seemed to mind when I footed the bill out of my pocket for years and years, happily enjoying the benefits of the site, and in some cases, figuratively spitting in my face despite all I did (time-wise and financially). While I appreciated the small group of benefactors that saw the value in the site, I don't think they should have to foot the bill for everyone else.

The extra money will also allow the site to expand, with more server space, features, etc - and to think I'm making anything resembling a profit or windfall from it far from reality.

It all happened before my time here I guess but I used to notice quite often how many cool members were banned. Maybe that's got something to do with it?

I have zero interest in getting involved in any of this, but I do want to point out that there is a big difference in having the freedom to do something and actually doing it. just because I can carry a concealed loaded weapon in this country doesn't mean I should do it. but having the option is nice.

Hey guys. I think there's some confusion here and I just want to speak on that and maybe help make sense of what's going on in this thread as far as the last few pages go regarding BDB and wattm. First of all hi, hello, wassup, miss lots of you, don't recognize most of you, and in turn most of you don't know who I am, and that's how it should be and this will help illustrate my point in a bit.

Secondly, I can understand why Joyrex would be defensive with Keltoi's question about the donation meter. You are the head and face and muscle of watmm and at baseline you are going to be defensive if you perceive hostility or potential undermining of how you run the site. You are providing a by and large thankless service for lots of people and when those people aren't consistently appreciative it starts eating away at an agreement. There's a phenomenon where forum users who have spent loads of time and effort into helping build a community feel like they have some sort of stake into how things are done, or at least feel like they have the right to be critical at times. Thus there is the actual watmm, the money, the adminstration, the moderation, the time, the sweat, the bullshit you have to deal with, and there is the ideal watmm, the intangible community that many people consider a part of their life. The working stiff who suits up, drives to his office, feels like an alien among the other suits, but alas can turn to likeminded individuals on his break to get through the day while he tries to figure his shit out. Because this ideal community is part of his life, he feels entitled to have a voice in how it is governed. The sad truth, probably to no one's fault, is this entitlement eats away at the agreement. I don't know what the agreement is exactly, but it has to be something like "I made this place, so ultimately you gotta do things that I'm okay with or you're gonna have to fuck off."

In my clearly insignificant opinion, it is fair of Keltoi to bring up his question regarding the donation meter. Perfectly fair. Joyrex you are probably so used to people trying to get an angle on you that you automatically deflect and try to find an angle on them. That's the only reason I can come up with you making this to have anything to do with BDB. That's understandable. You've had enough people talk shit about you and badmouth you over the years so I can follow your train of thought there. But I think you have it wrong as far as the BDB MO goes. The point is not to have a place to post tits finally. That's what the entire internet is for. The point is, some of us became a part of each other's lives for better or for worse, and we came up in a golden age of IDM together and shared all these amazing experiences and developments, and there was an actual community happening. Now in my case, over many years, my actions ate away at the agreement. To be fair, the details of the agreement changed -- the whole premise of posting here for some us was to be able to share unfiltered thoughts and try to sort our lives out with a soundtrack of amazing electronic music in the background. I do believe that premise was always lost on you, because one day you brushed that premise aside, and that's perfectly fine, but you have to understand, this is essentially why BDB exists. We just want to dump out our minds together and abstractly figure out the meaning of life. We are continuing a beloved dialogue that was one day deemed too uncouth for watmm. That's it. It should be symbiotic. We shouldn't be faulted for talking about things that aren't allowed to be talked about here, as peers, without moderation or judgment. There's really no need to be defensive or try to paint BDB in such a negative light because of that. The fact that Keltoi is part of that conversation on BDB is completely irrelevant to watmm's Donation Gate or Donagate or whatever you guys are calling it in all the chatrooms, so I'm kindly asking that we be left alone going forward regarding this issue.

I can understand not subscribing to the pay-to-post concept but seriously, even for a student like me who only had underpaid jobs in his life, 3$ a year is just a laughable amount of money to give... Get over it.
