the same thing happened in the 60s.  Tide or some laundry detergent company ran an ad touting the product as "A revolution in laundry detergent" trying to appeal to young people.  and advertising in general got all weird trying to be hip and "farout, man".  

they do that w/everything.. sort of like how the soundtrack for every car commercial was american derpstep edm for a while. "this is trendy let's throw it in an ad"

but this pepsi thing is kind of an SNL skit!  hilariously stupid.
