How does the World view America these days?

No worries, I didn't take it as rude.

I'm largely basing what I see on observations and low level university courses I took in sociology, so it's fairly meaningless. But when almost every violent crime in the paper is being perpetrated by a visible minority, it's hard not to draw a conclusion. That may sound racist or something, but I'm acknowledging these people are systematically funneled into high risk lifestyles.

I guess ultimately I don't see a point in flooding a system that is poorly equipped, with that same thing it's poorly equipped to handle. So until Canada can smarten up and handle it's immigration properly (including things like you said about educational equivalency), I don't see a point in taking several tens of thousands of refugees.

Looking at the Calgary Sun (ughhhh) website today - for Calgary - you have a Scott Monroe Ferguson charged with killing his girlfriend. This may be a racist assumption, but that doesn't sound like a very Somali name. Nabbed in a child porn sting were 6 Calgarians (is child porn violent? I don't know, but I do think it's fucking abhorrent though):

Luis Bexiga, 37, of Calgary;

Daniel Clarke-Ferr, 47, of Calgary;

Brad Drummond, 33, of Calgary;

Michael Hilles, 40, of Calgary;

Colin Penner, 60, of Sherwood Park;

Again - not very somali sounding names, but hey, maybe they've integrated into Canadian culture really well.

Or the deadliest act of mass murder in Calgary's history that was committed last year - by a Matthew De Grood.

Or Douglas Garland - who killed two grandparents and their grandchild.

I read about a lot of Somalis getting shot and killed in Alberta - (about 50 since 2008 - although most of it seems to be concentrated in the period of 2008-2011) - sad. Of course there 341 murders in Edmonton and Calgary from 2008 to 2013. And we don't know that all the perpetrators in the Somali murders were other Somalis. For example, if it were gang related, there is a very strong chance the Hell's Angels or other bike gangs could be involved.

It's easy to scapegoat things that are different from us.

I still live here in Alberta and see the murders and read about them in the paper and see the perps pics and I'm just telling you a large chunk of them are of Asian and Somali descent. I'm here and I live it. Have been for 26 years.

Actually this is exactly what I'm saying. Not disagreeing with this in any way shape or form.

I've also acknowledged that Canada's poor handling of immigration contributes significantly to the level of refugees and other immigrants "adjustment".

The difference between economic migrants and refugees is immense though stephen.

Refugees are fleeing completely fucked up situations, while economic and family class migrants are moving to Canada out of choice.

Particularly the completely fucked up situations they're running from. Pretty much anything is better than where they are fleeing.

I'm all for helping I guess it's just my sense of despair that lots of these people won't get proper opportunity even when they come here that's colouring my responses. I actually don't disagree about the language thing - I think people who immigrate (and by this I mean choose to migrate to that country, not refugees) to a country should put effort in to learn the language.

I mean after a couple of years of being in South Korea, I put the effort in to learn Korean - cause I knew I was gonna stick around for a few more years.

Learning the language of your adopted country doesn't mean giving up your own language and culture - it just means that you are able to understand government policy and communicate with the majority of the population, at least on a basic level.
