It's not everything layered on top of one another but things shuffle in and out over a limited number of overlays, i suspect something similar is going on with the sound. Also, i agree with the 'sounds like a crowded space' analogy, like a busy restaurant or something. I watched for a bit and then when i stopped to read the thread, my brain had to adjust lol.

It feels more invasive than most noisey stuff. When I turn it off I don't really feel the silence I just kind of feel disoriented. Incredible stuff.

Doesn't Friends start with a cold open? (I honestly can't remember). The end titles don't start simultaneously either but I suppose the network was happy to add a few extra commercials when episodes were a couple of minutes short.
