It may not be "good" in the traditional/IDM way or whatever but it's been on replay for a while and it really gets me moving (and I mean that literally), so yeah, good track. The record's kinda expensive though

anyway, i love it. it definitely calls back to the 'reach for the lasers, safe as fuck' feel of kindred.

burial is cheesy sometimes. but he's also deeply emotional. he makes feels. and one of the things i like most about him is he's utterly unaware of it. he wants to drop a pitch-shifted vocal which sounds like altern 8? fuck it, he will. he's like some mad electronic music idiot savant.

ha, was going to say the same thing.

"They're about guns, lasers, robots with laser guns in space. Monsters from the future. Explosions. Sylvester Stallone doing a backflip on top of a spike while Robocop carries a ghost up a mountain. Bombs and swords and that... IDM is awesome."

OKay then, is this sold out already or something, because a Discogs seller is asking 8 nonillion, 159 trillion, 76 billion, 998 million, 709 thousand GBP!

The economies of the world had better get printing monies so we can afford it!

sorry but that's bollocks, Burial was at risk of becoming predictable but has really been switching shit up on his recent e.ps. Are you really telling me you expected Rival dealer? I think the fact it was quite a departure from his sound is why a lot of people don't like it,

I definitely feel the same way. I don't normally go out of my way to buy Burial physicals...but this one had me yearning for dem vinyls after the third playthrough. I'm getting some serious prodigy vibes too.

Yeah I think he's actually branching out more than he ever did before Rival Dealer.

I had some pet theory that Rival Dealer was pulling from sounds and aesthetics of the music and media that people engrossed themselves into as kids and teens but then refuse to acknowledge later. Like, a catharsis of painful and deep emotions from teenage angst and all the stuff associated with it: music that is often cheesy and embarrassing. Rival Dealer seemed soaked in that.

A lot of nostalgic yearning gets so positive and idealized it warps and distorts your memories, to the point where one could even have faux nostalgia for music. For example I remember trying to get into bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth in college, because it vaguely reminded me of alt rock and grunge I actually listened when I was younger, as if I had some past connection to it. I didn't. But they seem cooler than admitting I used to listen to stuff like this at my shittiest, most angst-ridden years in high school. Hell, that song even now it triggers memories of back then, whether I want it to or not.

Anyway, Burial always had that as part of his sampling process - using video game soundtracks and pop vocals, but it's more unabashed than in the past.

well said, I listen often to rival dealer. but burial is something special for me, I love him deeply.

I agree with everything but dinosaur jr. this guy is a pure genius soloist. a pure and rare genius. the best guitarist Ive ever heard packed with so much emotions and combine with real interesting ideas. j mascis is one of my favorite of all time and I listen to him every day. His live bootleg are so amazing and his live versions of his songs are just as good. BTW, Ill never get sonic youth, its good, but forgetable for me. everyone has a phase then move on.

Temple sleeper is so good. been on replay on and off for 2 days.

Yeah I saw Dino Jr at FFFest and despite a shitty sound setup they kicked ass. Funnily enough I actually have some nostalgia for a few of their songs when I put them on mix CDs they were played relentlessly in my wife (then g/f's) car. Same with Sonic Youth - though a lot of their npisey early stuff I listened to in order to be a pretentious cool dude in college. Only a few albums I threw on repeat. There's plenty of other examples. I tried diving into bands like the Fall or Crass or any of those "our band could be your life" bands off SST simply because they are important, not because I actually was drawn to them. That said I've found a liking for shoegaze and dream pop of the 80s and 90s despite not knowing of it as a kid.

Funny enough, the last few or so years I have less nostalgia or visceral memories associated with listening to music - I think a lot of it has to do with streaming music so often and so casually. Hanging out on turntable.fm, some great road trip music choices, and select good live shows are about it when it comes to music memories of recent times. But like compared to 10 years ago and longer, there's no similar "I-can-remember-the-place-and-time-and-vibe" memory trigger I get when I revisit that stuff. I suppose without social media and nonstop interaction via pictures, likes, and over-saturation of media I stored memories better. I dunno. Perhaps I'm not letting enough time go by/over-thinking this.

Yeah, I totally get what you mean regarding music now leaving less of an imprint compared to what we listened to as adolescents. It all comes down to our music consumption habits: as you said, casually streaming music which is available to us easily and en masse = too much great stuff to process completely!

When we were kids the little music we had was on repeat constantly and finding genres we liked was down to trial and error; I don't know that I'll ever have a connection to an album in the sense that I do with Eno's 'Apollo', for instance, as it was my first ambient CD and the period in which I played it constantly overlapped with some major emotional tumult.

For albums like 'Tomorrow's Harvest' and 'Syro' I really hyped myself up and was sure to listen to them in a specially chosen location all the way through. Doing so left an indelible impression on the music akin to how I feel about albums I was introduced to as a kid.

So, I'd say that having that sort of connection to music is still very possible but the listening experience has to be elevated beyond simply streaming off YT... I hope that makes sense.

First time I've been disappointed with Burial, this. I absolutely love Rival Dealer, beautiful little record. Going to keep trying with this one though, see if it grows.

For CD-buyers, the Japanese Street Halo/Kindred release on Beat is brilliant, I always treat it as his third album.

Ever since I sat down and gave Burial a chance (I think it was with Kindred), I've loved everything else he's released without any effort. His aesthetic is deeply pleasing to me. It's really interesting how initially polarizing all his releases seem to be on WATMM.

This is a banger - love it. Ludd gets it spot on - from 5:11 it really kills.
