It probably started with those stupid progressive trance snare rushes, honestly.

May be, most of what's called EDM is very trance-like anyway, but the term 'drop' itself used to be more of a drum and bass thing.

I read a pretty interesting article around the rise of "trancey" dubstep where everyone and their mother was all about the drop (2008 or so?). The author mentioned that pre-arena EDM fanaticism, dubstep's drops were produced for clubs and enclosed areas where the huge sound systems would make the much more "subtle" drop of bass vibrate through your whole body, you really feel it. But with the rise of mobile phone speakers, laptops, and other cheap, tinny audio devices, this bass was kind of lost on people listening outside of clubs, so producers who made more over the top and obvious drops became more popular. I tried to do a Google search for the article but I can't find it, it's an interesting read, and makes sense considering music's constant marriage to its context, physical and cultural.

Stoked to watch OA II. The movement thing never bothered me, anyone familiar with Druidic studies will recognize the importance of movement to get to higher planes.
