Politics sub thread where people infected with the politics bug (who probably also like to go on about the pros and cons of football clubs) can natter on about who's best and worst and who'll win the game, sorry, election.

Avoid politics at all costs, it's a debilitating thing and embodies all the problems it claims to be trying to solve.

Yes, hide your head in the sand and continue to get shafted or have no say in the matter. Don't complain about shit when it hits the fan though, mmmkay?

Also if you lot could stop posting that lovely drawing of British Parliamentarians engaging in their favourite past-times, that would be just swell - it's more than a touch NSFW.

Finally, the court jester has often been used as the conscience of the king, Ran is the perfect example.

At this point we'd all be better off preparing ourselves for the #apocalypse, or #collapse

Why not just a global movement to start a new country? Maybe we can make some kind of agreement with Mexico and take a bit off of them?

This new country was formed in free land just this year:

A mass exodus to an independent scotland also works.

There will be new love from the ashes of us.

“For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens: as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone... This government will conclusively turn the page on this failed approach. As the party of one nation, we will govern as one nation and bring our country together. That means actively promoting certain values." David Cameron.

did he say that just now? or before?

serious fascist sentiment between the lines there.

yeah, worrying shit. labour would have been just as bad though, just trying to foist a slightly different set of abhorrent values down everyone's throat.

And the statement was made about terrorism laws....

So the Tories are gonna go stir up a hornet's nest and then we'll have a nice countdown til something new explodes in London, woo.

yeah, slightly less worrying than a statement about life in general. what's important though is how a statement like that translates into legislation, hard to tell how awful it'll be until then.

What abhorrent values are those exactly?

Labour are just as authoritarian (actually, probably more so) than the Conservatives. The ID Card scheme, stop and search, 90 days without trial, they've been worryingly silent on the Snooper's charter as well, wouldn't be surprised if their plans were even worse.

well, like I said before, we'll have to see what kind of legislative proposal results from this soundbite, but it's rather worryingly fascistic, no? it's one thing to want to promote certain values, but he's now saying that 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone' is no longer a government policy, which implies law abiding citizens are about to have their lives interfered with by the government, that never ends well. and even if it just starts with islamic fundamentalists and everyone is cool with that, who knows where it will lead. once you give the government a power, they're never keen to give it up, instead they'll look for new ways in which to use and abuse it.

no, not really. that sounds like a neohippie cliche.

what he's implying at is that you can stir a lot of shit from within the framework of a law, and there is something that needs to be done about that. looks pretty progressive to me.

Sounds like a way of shutting down not just mosques, but any other sources of dissent:

The measures, she added, will focus on "extremism of all sorts... that is seeking to promote hatred, that is seeking to divide our society, that is seeking to undermine the very values that make us a great country to live in".

...which will equate to threatening people like Russell Brand with prison he if continues to 'divide our society' - ie disagree with Tory polices.

"You my humble subjects must become an aggressive intolerant herd. We own you and you must obey if you want to live in peace... We will exert full power over all, despite our lack of wisdom and insight, and blinded by our foolish ideology. All dissenters are traitors, and must be controlled. That means dominating those we have been appointed to serve." David Cameron

"Whoa! Check it out! RO-BIGH-DUHS!"

sigh.. "That's Ribena.."

lol, I'm far from being a neo-hippy. you're awfully naive if you think this kind of shit won't get abused.
