Well, finally gave in and upgraded from Win 8.1 to 10. Had some serious lag initially, but just when I was contemplating a clean reinstall it seemed to have sorted itself out.

Some of the Lenovo apps were no longer compatible, and could have been why my C drive was 7 percent fragmented. Almost done with the defrag/optimization tho.

Windows 10 speeds up after it has built its indexes.

That explains it. Seems like I'm getting overall better performance now, after the upgrade. I guess it was the right move after all.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

One of the latest MS security updates (MS16-023) rolled out a windows 10 update ad to internet explorer 11 trying to get people to update to 10...

patch is KB 3146449, and is supposed to be a security patch not an ad generator.

One the patch is installed you can't remove KB 3146449 itself without completely removing the security fixes.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3139929

Just a heads up!!

edit: better summary here http://www.infoworld.com/article/3042155/microsoft-windows/windows-patch-kb-3139929-when-a-security-update-is-not-a-security-update.html

So uuuh, this windows 7 to 10 free upgrade is becoming more agressive...

Since it's out for a while, is it any good? Pros/Cons?

Should I, or shouldn't I?

I got my PC when windows 8 just came out, I was glad I skipped the upgrade then. But how many OS upgrades can one skip... Part of me wants to be "with it" with the hip "up to date with OS" crowd.

It depends, what do you use your PC for mainly? If you game a whole lot, Windows 10 might be your best bet. Do you do lots of poweruser stuff? Windows 10. If you don't do either, stick with 7. The notifications will go away this July I think.

Anyone have a favorite media player in Windows 10? Just got a new laptop and am in the process of converting over my massive mp3 library. Looking for one that makes it easy to edit tags and organize everything all at once. I was using Windows Media Player before, but I imagine there's something better out there for 10.

I used to use MediaMonkey before my collection got too large and I stopped caring about tagging stuff. Not sure what the latest version is like. I use WinAmp and the WinCue plugin for playback and searching (just using the path info), works fine for me, especially good with very large collections because it's very very fast and has very very low memory usage.

I've been using 10 since last year, and theres things which really annoy me about it still.

1. the login screen is way shitter than windows 7,first you have to hit enter or "swipe up", then there is a 1-2 second delay before it responds to my keyboard so if i type my password too quick it goes wrong. Plus microsoft keeps changing the background picture.

2. dont like the way you keep getting little popups on the bottom right of the screen, they get in the way.

3 there are compatability issues with my laptops touch pad and custom buttons, not really MS fault but still annoying

1. Also, you can change the lock screen settings (switch to a single picture, slideshow or random pictures from the internet) under Personalization in the Settings.

2. You can disable them, search for Notifications under Settings.

So i finally bit the bullet and installed the update...

OMG WINDOWS ARE HITLER /90s-early00s standard nerd

No it all went smooth, i notice no problems

Dont get what the big hubbub is all about

My only gripe is when you click the Start button you see all sort of shit, and get greeted with a stupid slogan saying "a life of discovery" or some crap. But you can custom that, thankfully.

Now only thing left for me to do is make a bunch of maps and fill them with pictures of my genitals so that the NSA got something to look at

I installed it on my imac, it runs pretty nicely. I was surprised at how well it handles low-latency audio out of the box. My last experience with Windows was a shitty Vista laptop and I had to jump through hoops just to get the latency down..

Windows 10 is at its best when you have Start10 as a replacement for the odd start menu and W10Privacy topped off with Spybot Anti-Becon to remove as much Micro$oft data collection as possible. When W10 is cut down I think it looks pretty nice!

W7 experience but with DirectX12 and better hardware optimization.

Holy fuck that is an intense wallpaper!

Also, there's a hidden 'dark mode' in W10 that you have to activate via a registry edit, but will be available in the 'Anniversary Update' coming out later this year.

Can you tell me more or give me a link? I was going to skip W10 because of how much it sucks but I may upgrade after all if there's going to be a dark theme.

Be aware that the dark theme only applies to 'Windows App Store' apps (previously known as 'Metro' apps)

For your average, every day Windows applications (like the majority of stuff that most people run on a PC) it won't apply.

Ah, thanks. Fuck that, then.

If you pull the ride side tiles off then the normal Windows 10 Start Menu doesn't really look too different:

Also, how are you going to 'skip' W10? Pretty soon you'll be forced to upgrade, and I highly doubt any near future versions of Windows will be marginally better - Microsoft seems to be taking the Apple approach and just make tweaks and refinements rather than changing the paradigm again like they did with W8 and piss everyone off.

I'll tell you what sucks now, in comparison: XP. I booted up an old netbook the other day hoping to revive it for working on pd patches on the train. Even after a re-install it was so horrible I had to just bite the bullet and install a minimal linux distro; unfortunately it's probably too old to run 7 or 10 very well (it barely ran XP).
