AFX playlist to convince music theory guy that RDJ is the man

Forget about trying to convince this music theory guy. The reason Rdj is the man hasn't got much to do with music theory. It's mostly context, sound/machine manipulation, and most of all the imaginivity, imo. If he doesn't understand the context, he won't be able to appreciate Rdj's music from a pure theoretical perspective. Which is in itself a pretty warped way to appreciate music, btw.

This. There isn't really anything all that interesting in terms of key modulation or anything like that. For me, what's interesting about RDJ's stuff is all textural and rhythmic. And there isn't even all that much in the way of unusual time signatures.

If the guy is completely stuck up on theory, you're probably better telling him to a go to a doctor who specialises in removing large objects from rectums (preferably head-shaped) :D

Maybe I misrepresented the project somehow, but he's not close-minded or stuck in theory or anything like that. He's just never spent a lot of time with RDJ.

Just let him explore Aphex himself man, trying to make people like music never works

Stoked to watch OA II. The movement thing never bothered me, anyone familiar with Druidic studies will recognize the importance of movement to get to higher planes.

There's not much theory wizardry in his music, it's all atmospheric really. His time signature is nearly always 4/4.

heh guys, lighten up. my friend requested a playlist. he wants to check it out but didn't really know where to start.

Forcing someone to appreciate something is kind of lame bro.

just tell the guy that afx music is amazing, then run for cover. i would make sure all my affairs were in order, close all the social media accounts, leave the area permanently. you don't want to face the guy if he doesn't approve of your musical taste.

I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

The playlist is pretty hot. The only difference I'd make is taking out the slowed down stuff. But there's not much of that so no biggie. It's a nice and round view of his stuff.

edit: actually that's one of the good sounding slowed down/same pitch vids. So nevermind. Heh.

Thanks for all the input. This is what I have

I daresay it's a pretty strong AFX playlist

Great selections! That ought to win over anyone that has Aphex music appreciating potential.

Honestly, I think someone who's into theory would be more into Autechre than AFX. Ae does more of the crazy experimental stuff, Aphex is just good, simple music (with the exception of some of the drill n bass stuff, but even that is in standard time signatures, and not that many tracks are crazy like that).

Your friend will probably be more impressed by technicality if you just hand over a copy of Quaristice or Exai.

during analogue studio class a colleague played some autechre to the teacher and the expression on his face was priceless, like an angry gaze, mumbling the words 'how primitive'. A couple of generation gaps maybe, but some of the academic electro acoustic guys I've met think music made for 2 speakers is by definition uninspiring.

lol, you have to have a 5.1 system to enjoy music?

@coolandfrank nice mix! had it playing all morning

good job at demonstrating that aphex feeling, beyond machine & novelty of electronic sounds, his ability to pull sounds so alien and create something so undeniably emotional & human
