I wondered that for awhile too, and also why they have more or less abandoned most of the side characters altogether.

And i also agree there should have been more side character stuff. The usual format now is that bart and/or lisa do something, whilst homer is seperately doing something. One being the comedic strand whilst the other the drama with the bulk of the air time devoted to the the drama.
