What I love about that band is that they don't really try to hard renewing themselves - they already have an excellent sound, and they just polish it to death. I think that's quite awesome, because they can mostly focus on the writing of the tunes.

They have a great sound, but I think the amount of polish is perhaps a disadvantage sometimes. Not so much in terms of the actual sound, but their live gigs seem sterile and calculated. They're more of a studio band, imo (nothing wrong with that).

have you seen them live ? i saw them 3 times and it was lot of fun, there music is complicated and they have to be very concentrated and pay attention all the time, even between the tracks they have to make little breaks to adjust everyhting.

oh man that beanie on Dave´s head looks so ridiculous.

Ah, sorry I think I wasn't clear. I've seen them live, but I think my problem with their live sets is that they don't stray from the studio versions at all. I understand that they play to a click and maybe even some pre-recorded audio, but it just wasn't different enough from the record for me to find it interesting. Compared say, PVT (ie. a band who use a similar setup on stage) who tend to get a bit more loose with their arrangements, even with a lot of pre-sequenced audio coming from a laptop. Also, Laurence Pike is a better drummer imo (probably a personal taste thing though).

I saw them live twice in Dublin, first time was after Mirrored came out and they were awesome, 2nd time was after Gloss Drop came out and was pretty meh, that one was an outdoor deal though, think they'd probably benefit from the better sound of an indoor gig.

From Warp FB page ;

Watch Battles perform four new tracks from ‘La Di Da Di’ at http://bttls.com

It's a live stream set on loop for the next 24 hours !

Tracklisting : The Yabba, Summer Simmer, Tyne Wear and Dot Com

after my first listens some tracks have much better live versions like the track megatouch also known as voodoo, most of the tracks are much shorter at the beginning which is sad because the live ones where more hypnotic, melodic and really sucked you in.

overall i´m a bit disappointed compared to their other 2 albums this lacks a bit of variaton and the right versions.

Just realised I hadn't pre-ordered it, rectified it by doing so.

I'm anticipating a similar disappointment, but at the same time, a lot of my disappointment with Gloss was with some of the vocal tracks. And, tbh, some of the songs on most of their releases have left me a bit cold for a while (that 12 min song on one of their EPs still seems Meh to me) but I'm sure I'll come round, given enough time.

Or you can quote this when the album is out and I'm replying with 'This is total GARBAGE'

oh its totally worth buying it but i think they tried to hard this time.

most of the tracks sound like jams and end up in an chaotic way , if you like free jazz ok but battles always had a more "minimalistic & organized" approach to their songstructure.

in my opinion 80% of ladidadi sounds like wall street which hurts my head

what do you guys think ?

Still have to give this a proper listen, I've spun it a couple times already but as background noise while doing other stuff. I agree with you on both counts, this album feels like a really long track and all the tracks kind of blend together. Like a 50 minute Battles Wall Street-esque jam, which is a bit overwhelming.

Also, considering how much they've talked about "the art of repetition" in interviews, I was hoping for lengthier tracks, more drawn out progressions, etc. It's a really compact album, none of the tracks have much room to breath

yeah exaactly my thoughts man, especialy the art of repetition headline is ridiculous its actually the opposite.

well well i wonder why this thread only has 40 replies so far i thought watmm love Battles.

I listened again to Gloss Drop recently, and as always Africastle blew me away immediately (like Race In did). I really don't feel like The Yabba will be such an amazing opener - well I still need to listen to the album in its entirety but it's already worrying me.
