Basically an iPhone 6 without the phone... the 128 GB model for 399 USD - does that make sense (and only through Apple)?

I wonder what's with the low capacity? If it was 256gb or higher I would buy one.

Just give me a decent iPod classic replacement, the only Apple product I've ever bought. Who cares about all this stuff that you already have on a phone?

is it that hard to put big storage in a portable player? seems like almost no one does that anymore. it's all SD cards it seems.

From the manufacturers standpoint, it's pretty fucking easy. It's kind of tricky to do it aftermarket (yourself).

I don't understand with how cheap high capacity SSD's are now why they are so low capacity. I feel like they're pushing the cloud/subscription based streaming agenda....

This too.

I resorted to buying an aftermarket one that has 240gb SSD in it but I paid out the ass for it.

you may have a point here

Probably a lot of it is down to cost as well - while a 250 GB SSD is relatively cheap, think about the fact that 95% of an SSDs cost is the flash memory itself - the 399 for a 128 GB iPod's flash memory is probably around 40-50% of the cost at most.

I just wish Apple would allow an SD card expansion - you can get them for your MacBook Pro (and effectively double the storage capacity)...

The only two Apple products I've ever owned were both iPods. I bought a 4th gen Touch and more recently, a final gen Classic.

I had no experience with smartphones prior to the Touch, so I was quite impressed with that. A great little multimedia device I could carry around. Awesome, until the headphone jack died on me. I never got around to fixing it so it's been collecting dust for a few years now. Managed to snag a Classic last year, literally days before Apple pulled the plug on 'em. Very happy with it. Syncing with my iTunes library is a piece of piss and the massive storage space is a lifesaver.

I don't understand why Apple have decided to completely bomb out large storage space ever since the Classic, especially with today's tech. That's one of the major downfalls imo. Must be something to do with Apple trying to push everyone towards their streaming service, in the same way they got rid of CD/DVD drives on iMacs/Macbooks. Sneaky bastards.

best thing they ever did imo. Optical media fucking sucks. I understand the importance of it, historically, but it's slow and fragile these days compared to other kinds of storage.

People looking for an old school iPod replacement should check out a Walkman: http://store.sony.com/64-gb-hi-res-walkman-digital-music-player-zid27-NWZA17SLV/cat-27-catid-All-MP3-Players

I checked these out but the screens are really fragile (according to reviews). That's the only reason I didn't get one.

Regardless of speed and durability, they're still both immensely popular and current formats. Almost everyone has CD/DVD collections, but Apple can't make money from people's existing libraries, so no optical media drives. Thank god for iTunes and Apple Music, eh? ;)

I'm sure people were saying the same thing about floppy/zip drives, etc.. and I'm pretty sure those drives were discontinued while people still had big collections of disks.

I still keep an external DVD drive lying around but I can't remember the last time I used it!

Yeah but come on. The floppy disk format was exclusively for computer use. I don't ever recall walking into supermarkets/record stores/charity shops and seeing big displays of albums and movies for sale on floppy. It made sense to eradicate that format.

There isn't a bigger medium for movies than DVD. It's still the universal standard and metric fucktons more popular than floppy ever was. Sure, some people had floppy disk collections, but it's safe to say that MOST people HAVE DVD collections. I doubt anything, physically, is going to replace it. I'm a big Blu-ray fan, but I sure as shit don't expect it to outsell DVD at any point. For Apple to take that away from its users, at this point in time, is a bit stupid. Not everyone has internet, and not every connection will allow real-time video streaming (believe me, I still go to houses of some friends/relatives, and even 240p YouTube is a buffer sesh)

Sure, but you don't need a computer in order to watch DVDs. Besides, there's always the option of an external drive anyway. Less likely to fail.

External drives are just unnecessary hassle. I still see plenty of people commuting to/from work via train and watching DVDs on their laptops. They won't wanna lug an extra device around, and they're not gonna get a good, stable connection while travelling to stream video.

I juggle music between a pair of 16 gb devices all the time and it blows. Sorely tempted to get the 128 gb one of these for that reason alone, but probably should just wait to upgrade my phone.

I miss the iPod Classic as well. I looked into getting a used or new-old-stock one recently and they are even more expensive than before they were discontinued! Jesus, only Apple can discontinue some ancient product and people actually start paying MORE for it right away. Ridiculous.

Low capacity is good, because it makes one have to consciously choose and cherish the content that one is able to enjoy. With a hypothetical unlimited storage device, all our entertainment could be put on it, and most of it would be left unappreciated.

Appreciate content; not potential for quantity! There is absolutely no reason to need several hundred hours of tv/movies, several thousand hours of music, and several dozen games at our fingertips. We can do it- and we do do it- but all it does is dilute appreciation.

Just as having the vast majority of human knowledge at our fingertips has not made most people smarter, having applicably endless hours of entertainment at our fingertips has not improved life quality. Desire is divided by immediately freely available choices, to result in appreciation, so the more immediately free choices available, the more our desire is divided, thus diluting appreciation; by extension, diluting life quality and enjoyment.

The only way to move forwards in the phuture unlimited world, is to artificially limit free decisions that result in pleasure.

For these reasons- back in the day- those few tapes/CDs that you could take with you when going out, was some of the best music you ever experienced in your life. A harsh limit was put on your portable music listening variety, but the most important result of this was: You listened to the same music over and over and over, because you loved it.

i dunno, it's more like i listen to what i've put on there, cause you might have an high capacity device but it doesn't mean that you will sync it with your music collection. i usually play either what i was working on that day or whatever i downloaded from soundcloud that i'm into, or stuff i've got through bandcamp. things stay on my flashdrive though but it's not in the latest folder so doesn't get spun back into the listening list unless i'm on a long drive. Which sends to mootville all your pointy points.

lol i have a 2gb ipod shuffle which belongs to my ex who found it on the street (apparently it was originally purchased by one "jerome briand")

I'm running rockbox on an 80gb ipod classic, it rocks.

Peace, I kinda agree with you, but not entirely, since it really pisses me off to no end when I wanna hear a certain track and it's not there.

Yeah. There are other reasons too. There’s something to be said for a dedicated music-playing device with no other junk on it. The new iPod Touch theoretically has as much space as one of the latter generations of Classics, but it’s just a different vibe on an iOS device.

Also, I always remember it being much faster to sync my iPod Classic than the newer flash-based devices. The write speed on whatever flash Apple uses is pretty damn slow.
